We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we honor the rich traditions and share in the experience of Día de los Muertos on Sunday, November 2 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station located in Point Loma! Rooted in community, family, and remembrance, this event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. Through music, art, hands-on and interactive activities, we invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly gathering designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community. We’ll be decorating calavera (skull) cookies in the morning. Then, we’ll enjoy music making and festivities before a procession set to begin at 2 p.m. Join us as we walk together through the Dorothea Laub and Dance Place Buildings. We’ll enjoy the art, music making, and handmade shrines made by local community members and students! Festivities and open house will run until 5 p.m. Specific activities will be available only as long as supplies last. We hope to see you and your loved ones there! For the NPR Student Podcast Challenge, two students from High Tech Middle Media Arts in Point Loma looked to their heritage as inspiration for a podcast about growing up mixed race.

"Because We Eat." With this simple truth, artist Antonia Davis challenges us to confront the human cost of the food we consume in a new mixed-media installation. Join us for the opening night and a special program designed to explore our connection to the harvest and the farmworkers who sustain it. 5:30 p.m. | Special Pre-Opening Film View the moving documentary, "The Harvest/La Cosecha" (75 minutes), that follows the arduous journey of three children from the scorching heat of Texas' onion fields to the winter snows of the Michigan apple orchards and back south to the humidity of Florida's tomato fields to follow the harvest. 6:45 p.m. | Installation Premiere & Artist Reception After the documentary, join us in viewing Davis's art installation, "Because We Eat." Join us for a special Art Break with Dawn Williams Boyd, a celebrated visual storyteller whose richly layered textile work, "Piscean Dancer," is featured in "Layered Narratives - Quilted Stories of Gender and Race at the 1876 Centennial." A working artist for over five decades as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, Boyd brings deep personal experience and fierce conviction to every piece she creates. In this talk, she’ll reflect on her creative journey, from discovering her calling in a high school biology lab to finding her voice through fabric, inspired in part by the legendary Faith Ringgold. Dawn Williams Boyd (b. 1952) Neptune, New Jersey. Boyd lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. Her self-described narrative “cloth paintings” chronicle seminal moments in American history. Indigenous Peoples’ Day Craft Camp for Kids, 7-12yrs! In this half-day Craft Camp, kids will explore craft making and corn! First Nations Peoples of North America have been masters of art and craft for thousands of years. One very humble but beautiful craft is their functional arts using corn and corn husks. After corn is ripened and harvested it needs to be fully dried. To do this the husks were carefully braided to form a long strong strand. The braided strands were then hung in their dwellings for safe keeping. A side benefit is the braids are beautiful works of art that doubles as a highly nutritious food for later use. Another creative use for some of the leftover corn husks is corn husk figures. These could vary from female dolls with colorful dresses to stout men figures with traditional simple clothing. These figures could be for children’s play toys or ceremonial gatherings. This class will share techniques on how these hand made crafts come to life.
