From the organizers: The Book Catapult proudly welcomes award-winning children's book author & illustrator Carson Ellis for her illustrated adult memoir, One Week in January: New Paintings for an Old Diary on Friday, October 11 at 7pm. Carson will be in conversation with bestselling author Maile Meloy. In January 2001, the young artist Carson Ellis moved into a warehouse in Portland, Oregon, with a group of fellow artists. For the first week she lived there, she kept a detailed diary full of dry observations, mordant wit, turn-of-the-millennium cultural touchstones, and hijinks with friends, including her future husband, Colin Meloy, who is now the frontman and lead songwriter of The Decemberists. Two decades later, Carson rediscovered this old journal of hers and richly illustrated it with extraordinary new paintings in the signature style that has made her a bestselling and award-winning picture book author today. One Week in January is a snapshot of a bygone era, a meticulous re-creation of quotidian frustrations and small, meaningful moments, and a meditation on what it means both to start your journey as an artist and to look back at that beginning many years later. It beautifully captures the intensity of feelings and friendships in young adulthood, when everything is completely uncertain, and everything is enormously important. One Week in January is mundane, specific—and somehow completely magical. It’s also very, very funny. Carson Ellis is the author and illustrator of bestselling picture books Home and Du Iz Tak? (a Caldecott Honor book) and the illustrator of several books for children, including The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Lee Stewart, The Composer Is Dead by Lemony Snicket, and The Wildwood Chronicles by Colin Meloy. She has won awards for illustration, and as the illustrator-in-residence for Meloy’s band, The Decemberists, she has received Grammy nominations for album art design. She contributes work to The New Yorker, The New York Times, and other publications. Ellis lives on a farm in Oregon.

The Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) is now accepting applications for its upcoming leadership conference. YLA is a transformative one-day workshop designed to empower and educate LGBTQ+ youth, their parents, caregivers, and educators. Art, Power, Equity Partners with J. Walcher Communications for “Curator-in-Residence” Shows First Show Features Chicana, Interdisciplinary Artist Katie Ruiz Art, Power, Equity (APE) – an arts-based enterprise that supports underrepresented artists and promotes equity, access and opportunity in the creative economy – and long-time public relations and marketing firm, J. Walcher Communications (JWC) – have announced a series of three artist residencies this summer. This programming is the evolution of APE and JWC’s “Curator-in-Residence” partnership that began in 2021. JWC will provide a dedicated exhibition space within its historic offices in Sherman Heights, with the first show of San Diego-based interdisciplinary artist Katie Ruiz, known for her paintings and fiber sculpture. The first artist will select the next artist in the series. APE’s first exhibition will open with an artist talk, reception and viewing with painter and multimedia artist Ruiz on Saturday, June 8, 6 - 9 p.m. The show is open to the public every Saturday 1 - 4 p.m. from June 8 through June 29, and during the week by appointment only. Ruiz' work is based on textiles from blankets to crochet, using painting and textile art as a metaphor for her identity as a mixed-race woman raised in two cultures. This show will feature Pompom installations as well as mixed media works she has coined as "Combinas," mixing painting and fiber art. Art, Power, Equity establishes relationships with BIPOC artists and art professionals to develop projects and exhibitions that cultivate, promote and showcase those who meet at the intersections of under-representation, economic vulnerability and community development. “Artists have a wide range of needs and affordable spaces to create and exhibit work is essential. Additionally, the power to influence and determine who gains access to available spaces is another critical issue for artists and creators and we believe this program addresses both; empowering artists as a creative community to support their peers and gain access to new markets and networks,” said founder and curator Kamaal Martin. “JWC is powerfully demonstrating the role the business community can play in supporting San Diego’s creative economy.” Ruiz is the creator of the Pompom Project, a community program that invites participants to make yarn pompoms for large installations made of pompoms. Building community is at the zenith of Ruiz' work. She aims to connect folks through craft making and "craftivism." Ruiz has a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Art from Northern Arizona University and a Master’s degree of Fine Art from The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture in NYC. “As long-time art supporters and enthusiasts, we love having the opportunity to use our office to support artists and curators, especially underrepresented BIPOC artists,” said Jean Walcher, president and founder of JWC. Ruiz has selected Kelvin Lopez, a printmaker with a MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, to be August’s featured artist. Low VOC is an exhibition of prototypes created by artists and designers from the San Diego and Tijuana regions made primarily with engineered wood composite panels referred to as Naturally Bonded Boards (NB boards). NB boards are non-toxic, biodegradable, and recyclable, made from sawdust and post-industrial/ post-consumer and recycled fibers without added formaldehyde. These boards were developed during a collaborative effort between Research Mechanical Engineer John F. Hunt (now retired), of the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory and artist/designer Christine Lee. Between 2010 and 2014, a variety of NB boards was created through multiple rounds of board forming were made. Curator Christine Lee invited other artists/designers to experiment with not only how they could apply end-user applications to this material, but also to consider how the types of adhesives and finishes that would be applied could have a positive or negative impact.
