Author Event With T. Jefferson Parker, Jim Kempton Join the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library on Sunday, October 13, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for an “Authors, Wine & Hors d ‘Oeuvres” event featuring local Edgar Award winning author T. Jefferson Parker, and California Surf Museum Director, Jim Kempton. All proceeds benefit the Oceanside Public Library. In addition to sipping wine and sampling hors d ’Oeuvres, there will be the opportunity to bid on a variety of silent auction items including a two-day stay at an Airbnb in Oceanside, museum memberships, paintings by local artists and much more. CJ Di Mento, Oceanside Library Director, will moderate a forum featuring the two authors after which there will be a question and answer period and an opportunity to have the author’s books signed. Benito Bautista and Emma Francisco launched San Diego Filipino Cinema in 2018 and will be hosting the 4th Annual San Diego Filipino Festival in October.

This year we are building awareness for lung health in a whole new way, with an exclusive pickleball Tournament and Celebration of lung health! This year, ABC’s First Golden Bachelor and Pickleball enthusiast Gerry Turner will be joining us in the celebrity match on Center Court with other notable American Lung Association friends. Whether a first-time player or weekend warrior, all are welcome to join and compete against other local mission-oriented business and community members from across Southern California. The day starts with a free clinic by a pickleball pro followed by various skill level tournaments. The top two teams from each tournament will then compete on Center Court for awards and bragging rights! Top fundraising teams will also be acknowledged too! To add to the fun and networking, there will be a celebrity match and many VIPs to interact with throughout the event and at post tournament celebration. “Play Your Way” Want to participate, support and play, but you can’t be with us in person? The Department of Education's efforts to keep racial diversity out of schools has left educators wondering how and when to teach students about Black history, especially during Black History Month.

About Justin & Melonie Grinnell MELONIE GRINNELL is an active as an educator and performer. She began studying piano at an early age and has since been recognized for her skills as a pianist, and her abilities as a vocalist, music educator, and musical director. Melonie received her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with jazz emphasis from the University of Miami and a Masters of Music performance degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. Additionally, she is on the faculty for the Francis Parker/KSDS 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop where she teaches jazz piano and co-directs middle school to high school student ensembles. She is also active as an adjudicator for instrumental jazz festivals including the Coronado/COSA Jazz Festival and the KSDS Jazz 88/CMEA festival. JUSTIN GRINNELL is a San Diego-based freelance jazz bassist and music educator. More importantly, he is a husband to pianist/educator Melonie Grinnell and father to their two sons. In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest. Justin received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Jazz Performance from San Diego State University while studying with bassists Gunnar Biggs and Bert Turetzky. Justin also achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status for a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Besides studying privately with Los Angeles' first-call jazz bassist, Darek Oles, Justin's enrollment at USC gave him the opportunity to study with internationally-recognized jazz artists Peter Erskine, Russ Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, and Alan Pasqua.
