  • Landscape Painting: Problem Solving and Critique Pat Kelly Saturday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. November 1 (1 day, 4 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio $100/$120 This discussion-only workshop will help students improve their landscape painting by learning how to solve problems and critique their own work. For more experienced painters, it is an opportunity for discussion and a springboard for developing a personal style. We will look at student landscape paintings two ways: - Virtual: Students submit a digital image of one of their landscape paintings before the workshop. - Real Time: Students also bring the painting to the workshop for critique. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about your work and learn how to self-critique. Pat will critique with live digital examples using submitted images. The digital format is especially valuable for demonstrating corrections, visualizing suggestions, and generating discussion. Materials: Please submit a jpeg image of your painting to patmkellystudio@gmail.com. Bring your oil, acrylic or watercolor painting to class. • Free Teen Art is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. Canada Kerwin has worked as a K–Grade 2 art volunteer since 2005, creating age-appropriate lessons that include introduction to art theory and artists’ biographies and tie-in to curricula as needed. Retired from the healthcare field, Canada also served in the US Navy. She applies her background experience to her ongoing art studies at Mira Costa College, focusing on the human form through life drawing and sculpture. She says, “Capturing the infinite expressions of the body through gesture and line is a very fascinating and gratifying practice.” Athenaeum Music & Arts Library on Facebook / Instagram

  • Jax Atelier Celebrates Grand Opening of First Brick-and-Mortar Shop in Normal Heights San Diego, CA — October 26, 2025 — After years of dreaming, planning, and creating, local artist Jacki Geary is thrilled to announce the grand opening of Jax Atelier, her first-ever brick-and-mortar retail space. The grand opening celebration will take place on Saturday, November 15, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 3180 Adams Avenue, San Diego, CA 92116, in the heart of the Normal Heights neighborhood. Founded in 2018, Jax Atelier began as a creative brand centered on handcrafted art and design. With over 25 years of experience as a professional artist, Jacki has brought her distinctive vision to life through unique collections of one-of-a-kind earrings, block-printed textiles, journals, greeting cards, prints, original paintings, and photography. In addition to her own creations, the new shop will also feature a thoughtfully curated selection of handmade goods from other talented makers — including artisan soaps, candles, and cards — along with treasures from Jax’s beloved vintage collection of pottery, glassware, artwork, and home décor. “This announcement is something I’ve been dreaming about for so many years — and it’s finally here,” says Jacki Geary. “I hope that the shop brings a little joy to people’s day — that it feels like a warm hug, filled with creativity and inspiration. It may be a small space, but the intention is big.” The grand opening event on November 15 will welcome the community to explore the space, meet the artist, and shop an inspiring selection of locally made and vintage goods. “I truly couldn’t have made it here without the love and encouragement of my amazing family, friends, and customers,” Jacki adds. “You are the reason I get to do what I love.” Jax Atelier on Facebook / Instagram
  • Join Palomar College's Pride Center for a very special screening of "Playland" followed by an in-person conversation with the film's director, Student Academy Award winner Georden West! With an eclectic ensemble of queer performers, including drag icon Lady Bunny and POSE's Danielle Cooper, "Playland" is transdisciplinary in every sense of the word: music, dance, archival footage, tableaux, opera, and performance art are layered into an ethereal piece subverting all boundaries. Produced by Palomar Cinema Professor Russell Sheaffer, Georden West’s debut feature is an expressionist and very queer bricolage, focusing on an atemporal night in Boston’s oldest gay bar, the Playland Café. • Indigenous Peoples’ Day Craft Camp for Preschoolers! In this half-day Craft Camp, preschoolers will explore craft making and corn! First Nations Peoples of North America have been masters of art and craft for thousands of years. One very humble but beautiful craft is their functional arts using corn and corn husks. After corn is ripened and harvested it needs to be fully dried. To do this the husks were carefully braided to form a long strong strand. The braided strands were then hung in their dwellings for safe keeping. A side benefit is the braids are beautiful works of art that doubles as a highly nutritious food for later use. Another creative use for some of the leftover corn husks is corn husk figures. These could vary from female dolls with colorful dresses to stout men figures with traditional simple clothing. These figures could be for children’s play toys or ceremonial gatherings. In this class children will be corn shelling and creating corn husk figures. Children will take corn husk figures and a bag of shelled corn that can be used to make corn bread or planted next spring. • Military, first responders and sibling discounts. • Scholarships available. • If this class is full, join the Interest List to be notified.
