"Save the Ocean 5" art and poetry exhibition from March 26 to May 28 celebrates the richness of the ocean environment by displaying a variety of mediums from a diverse range of artists, whose work is about the ocean world. Front Porch Gallery in collaboration with Surfing Madonna Oceans Project endeavors to promote a love and understanding of the fragile coastal environment by encouraging people to be stewards of the ocean, to appreciate what we have and preserve it for future generations. Artists will have the opportunity to share their experience at Docent Tours, and poets will be invited to read at the reception. Throughout the exhibition we’ll host opportunities for the community to view the work and experience creative engagements at the gallery through making, discussing, and viewing programs. Philanthropies Supported by Assistance League of Greater San Diego: OPERATION SCHOOL BELL – We provide clothing and school supplies for underserved students in our community to help them look and feel their best, ensuring they are engaged in education and they thrive academically, regardless of their circumstances. COMMUNITY SUPPORT – We provide clothing and supplies to unhoused people (both children and adults), victims of domestic abuse, foster youth, refugee families, community resource centers, and victims of emergencies such as floods and fires. ENRICHING FOSTER YOUTH – We help to expose foster youth to the arts with a focus on visual arts, music and performing arts in local venues by partnering with local foster organizations. BOOK BUDDIES – We assist students to become lifelong learners by collaborating with their teachers to encourage reading by practicing reading either in person or online in a one on one or group setting. OPERATION LOANER HEARING AID – We provide short term loaner hearing aids for newborns to young adults up to 21 who are waiting for replacements which can take 6 months. We also provide long term use for low-income families and children with significant hearing loss. We partner with San Diego United School District (East and South Counties) and SDSU Audiology Department. SNEAKERS FOR MILITARY PRESCHOOLERS – We provide sneakers, Bombas socks, sweatshirts, pants, pajamas, sunsuits and jackets for children of enlisted military personnel in partnership with STEP (Support the Enlisted Program). TWAIN HIGH SCHOOL – We provide recognition events to support students in this alternative high school program on the main campus, Mira Mesa, Morse, Crawford and Hoover High School campuses. We also provide financial scholarship support for students attending one of San Diego’s community colleges. UPPER DIVISION SCHOLARSHIPS – We provide scholarships for fulltime students who have completed community college and are transitioning to an accredited college or university in pursuit of a four-year degree or continuing in those community colleges that offer baccalaureate degrees.

Thursdays, May 15, 22, 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26, 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Stained glass is unusual among the arts because of its direct relationship with light. When light passes through colored glass, different values, textures, and densities combine to form an extraordinary palette. Explore this magic by creating your own unique leaded stained-glass panel. In this 7-week course, you will learn from stained glass professional Lisa Maywood as you complete one or more 2-dimensional panels that will transform any room or space. The enrollment fee covers the cost of basic drawing materials, lead, solder, cement, and the use of the tools and machinery. Glass will be procured by each student on their own outside of class. Vintage Glassworks Studio (was Blue Dolphin Glass) is a great local source in San Diego. If you prefer your own supplies, please bring your own colored pencils and paper that is larger than 12″x12″ to the first class as you plan your project(s). It is also recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, dust mask, gloves). We have eye protection available if you do not have your own. There is no prerequisite for this class.
