Even better is the wonderful surprise of receiving a handmade card to treasure. We will make simple cards with leaf prints, as well as more intricate cards with interesting folds. Making cards is a great way to relax, offers a straightforward creative outlet, and produces beautiful items to share with friends and family. Materials: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils, a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or PVA & brush or very small roller), 12” ruler, scissors. Optional/recommended: 12” centering ruler, bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder. Materials will be provided to create the cards and make envelopes for them. The National Working Waterfront Network’s Conference is the only national event that brings together people from across North America to connect with one another and showcase initiatives that protect and promote working waterfronts. Working waterfronts include waterfront lands, waterfront infrastructure, and waterways that are used for water-dependent activities, such as ports, marinas, small recreational boat harbors, and fishing docks. By design, the conference moves around the country to highlight the diversity of our nation’s working waterfronts; to foster a cross-fertilization of ideas, knowledge, and solutions; and to generate strategic partnerships. The National Working Waterfront Network is pleased to be partnering with California Sea Grant to host the 2025 conference. The conference will take place from February 4 to February 6, 2025 in San Diego, California, with pre-conference events occurring on February 3. Website registration is closed. Program Structure *Plenary Sessions, which will feature leaders and keynote presenters from the working waterfronts and waterways community. *Traditional Concurrent Sessions, which will include 15-20 minute speaker talks accompanied by PowerPoint presentations. Concurrent sessions will be arranged from individual abstracts submitted on similar topics. *Breakout “Panel” Sessions, which will include 90-minute breakout sessions with a panel of speakers on topics related to a specific theme. *Roundtable Discussions, which will include 90-minute breakout sessions of a facilitated and interactive discussion with engaged attendees on specific topics. *Formal Poster Session, which will feature all NWWN Conference poster presentations. *Creative Communication Installations, includes an individual or team presentation, discussion or performance of art, media, film, poetry, etc.

Tuesday–Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. March 25 – 27 (3 Days, 18 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Geoff begins all classes with lessons in watercolor handling, notably the relationship between brush mixture and paper moisture and the concept of connection. During the daily demonstrations, the class will cover color mixing, brush handling, and contour drawing skills. Painting from life gives you the opportunity to observe directly from nature different forms of light and surfaces. There will be a focus on impressionistic interpretations of fruit and flowers through the use of watercolor techniques to express form: wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brushing, splattering, lifting, and most importantly adding water. Wednesday, February 5 · 1 - 10 p.m. A day-long cypher and battle led by two notable hip hop artists, Johnny Lopez (Johnny 5) and Quentin Robinson (SpecialFX). Johnny5 was born in Oakland and is a Mexican/Latino professional Turf Dancer and the founder of TURFinc - a local Oakland/Bay Area-based company that instills positive changes in the community through dance. SpecialFX is a father of two, a Marine Corps Veteran and the founder of Movement4Movements. At CSUSM, they will share hip hop dance and culture with students, faculty, staff and the local community. The event includes guest lectures, dance workshops and a cypher featuring authentic hip hop dancers, performances, competitions and classes. Hybrid writing is a popular creative writing approach used by contemporary writers. This lively class will explore unusual, interesting forms of writing–ideal for both prose and poetry writers. Craft lessons will introduce each specific form, and we will read aloud several examples. Prompts will allow students to practice and experiment with that week’s form, and sharing will be encouraged but not required. Additionally, the final class will include opportunities and considerations for publication submission. Classes may be purchased individually or as a group (for a package discount).
