  • Children will explore diverse art forms and dance styles from different cultures, learning about the rich traditions and history behind them. From the vibrant colors of Mexican folk art to the energetic rhythms of African dance, students will have the opportunity to create their own artwork, try new dance moves, and discover how art and dance connect people across the globe. Students will showcase their artwork and dance skills in a short performance on the final day of class.   • This Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Learn foldforming and the art of patinas with award-winning metal artist and blacksmith, Pat Downing. In this all-day class, students will learn about safety, tools, and the basic methods of both foldforming and patinas. The class will consist of 3 hours of forming techniques and 3 hours focusing on patinas, with a one-hour lunch break. This is a hands-on techniques class designed to show how one can achieve folds and then apply patinas to finished pieces. In this class, students will work in copper, but the methods taught can be used in almost any metal and size, from jewelry to public art. What to bring: BYF (bring your favorite) hammer & safety glasses, if you have them. If not, you can borrow from ours. Students are welcome to bring a lunch to eat at the studio or nearby, or may purchase lunch nearby (there are many options in Liberty Station). Materials fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class and includes copper and patinas. This class is appropriate for ages 18 years and older. No prior experience necessary.   • Join us for a panel discussion on Saturday, March 8 from 12 - 1:30 p.m. with artists Paul Kitagaki Jr. and Wendy Maruyama, moderated by Sharon E. Bliss and Kevin B. Chen of SFSU Fine Arts Gallery. "Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" examines the legacy of Japanese American incarceration during WWII through the lens of the "Garden of Remembrance" (2000 - 2002), a permanent public art memorial created by Ruth Asawa and others for on San Francisco State University’s campus, honoring the resilience of this community. The artworks shown in the exhibition range from traditional to experimental in various media and explore ancestry, family histories and lived experiences resulting from Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The exhibition includes Mark Baugh-Sasaki, Ruka Kashiwagi, Paul Kitagaki Jr., emerita professor Wendy Maruyama, Lisa Solomon and TT Takemoto.
