  • Kids explore cooking & crafts! Choose from the following dates: Mon-Fri, June 2 – 6 -or- July 7 – 11, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about cooking with farm-to-table ingredients and an equal mix of fun, traditional handmaking & crafting! Is your child curious about where their food comes from? Does your child love to make crafts? This summer, open their world to exploring the bounty of local, colorful ingredients and how those foods got from the ground to our plates with local culinary arts instructors from Sticky Fingers Cooking. Did your child know that carrots can improve your eyesight, and cherries can help improve your memory? Young chefs will also learn what makes certain ingredients super healthy for the body and how delicious they can taste, while practicing basic cooking skills and techniques on their way to becoming super chefs!   • This Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Learn foldforming and the art of patinas with award-winning metal artist and blacksmith, Pat Downing. In this all-day class, students will learn about safety, tools, and the basic methods of both foldforming and patinas. The class will consist of 3 hours of forming techniques and 3 hours focusing on patinas, with a one-hour lunch break. This is a hands-on techniques class designed to show how one can achieve folds and then apply patinas to finished pieces. In this class, students will work in copper, but the methods taught can be used in almost any metal and size, from jewelry to public art. What to bring: BYF (bring your favorite) hammer & safety glasses, if you have them. If not, you can borrow from ours. Students are welcome to bring a lunch to eat at the studio or nearby, or may purchase lunch nearby (there are many options in Liberty Station). Materials fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class and includes copper and patinas. This class is appropriate for ages 18 years and older. No prior experience necessary.   • Kids explore ceramics and woodworking! Mon through Fri | July 28 – Aug 1 | 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about ceramics & woodworking for kids! Kids learn woodworking hand tool techniques from woodworking professional, Steffanie Dotson. A mom, woodworker, furniture maker, and Executive Director at San Diego Craft Collective, she teaches woodworking to both children and adults year-round. With a focus on safety, Steffanie creatively mentors children and fosters confidence through woodworking. Kids will also explore ceramics with visual artist-educator, Lydia Kardos. Each camper will learn and practice ceramic hand building techniques to make fun, long-lasting projects in this traditional medium full of creative flexibility. This camp is for kids, ages 7-12 years. Projects and depth of learning are matched up to the children’s age/ability. OPTIONAL | Lunch Hour Supervision If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child transferred from another camp, let us know! If your child is signed up for morning and afternoon camps here at The Maac at Liberty Station (the building San Diego Craft Collective is located in–Dorothy Laub Music & Arts Center), we’re here to provide that space for your them.   • Join us for a panel discussion on Saturday, March 8 from 12 - 1:30 p.m. with artists Paul Kitagaki Jr. and Wendy Maruyama, moderated by Sharon E. Bliss and Kevin B. Chen of SFSU Fine Arts Gallery. "Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" examines the legacy of Japanese American incarceration during WWII through the lens of the "Garden of Remembrance" (2000 - 2002), a permanent public art memorial created by Ruth Asawa and others for on San Francisco State University’s campus, honoring the resilience of this community. The artworks shown in the exhibition range from traditional to experimental in various media and explore ancestry, family histories and lived experiences resulting from Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The exhibition includes Mark Baugh-Sasaki, Ruka Kashiwagi, Paul Kitagaki Jr., emerita professor Wendy Maruyama, Lisa Solomon and TT Takemoto.
