South Bay Earth Day returns to Bayfront Park! Update: Chula Vista’s South Bay Earth Day celebration now features a new, free, headline performance by genre-bending band Ozomatli! This celebration will feature a host of family-friendly activities, workshops, exhibits, vendors, art, food and drink, nonprofits, how-to and all-day entertainment featuring a nationally recognized, surprise headline recording artist. In addition to celebrating our precious, fragile planet and its bounty, South Bay Earth Day will engage and motivate visitors to choose environmentally friendly products and lifestyle choices, learn and practice, sustainable and mindful habits. Highlights of the zero-waste, day-long activation will include: · Fix-it-Clinic. Repair extends the life and reduces the environmental footprint of devices, furnishings and objects. Have something that needs fixing from lighting and gadgets to small electronics and mechanical devices? Bring them in! Mend your favorite outfit. Repair road and mountain bikes. One of our experts will help you evaluate, diagnose and fix it if they can. · Tie-Dye Workshop. Upcycle your plain (light-colored) garments and fabrics into original, colorful creations. · Live Entertaiment. All-day performances include Dreaming of You—Ultimate Selena Tribute, and a surprise marquee headliner to be announced. · Over 50 Green Vendors: everything sustainable and eco-conscious, from home furnishings to jewelry and apparel to garden gadgets, as well as exhibits and booths from local nonprofits, including Chula Vista Water Sports and Ocean Connectors with The Kayak Café; Citizens Climate Lobby; Living Coast Discovery Center; MAAC Project; SanDiego350; San Diego Community Power; and Creation Care Ministry. · Artist Alley. Scripps Ranch Theatre continues Season 44 with "STEW" by Zora Howard, a co-production with Common Ground Theatre and directed by Yolanda Franklin. Mama is up early to prepare an important meal and, even with her family on hand to help, time is running short. Tensions simmer with three generations of Tucker women under one roof, but things come to a boil as the violence hovering around the periphery of their lives begins to intrude. The kitchen becomes a microcosm of the family, a protection from outside traumas with the making of the stew a challenging task (it gets ruined twice) and a group activity needed to keep the family together. (SOME STRONG LANGUAGE) The talented San Diego cast includes Marti Gobel as Mama, Danielle Bunch as Lillian, Jamaelya Hines as Lil’ Mama and Jodi Marks as Nelly. The production runs March 29 - April 21, 2024 on the campus of Alliant International University. Learn to Sew & Hem! This class is a continuation of the Family and Beginner Sewing 101. In this next series, Instructor Hannah Gioutlos will guide you through the process of sewing a drawstring backpack. We will learn how to place our pattern on your fabric and cut it out with scissors or a rotary cutter. Then we will show tips on using a seam gauge to find the hem allowance. Next we will learn the proper way to press our fabric into place to get ready for hemming. For students who complete this project early, you can also learn to sew a pet bandana for your furry friends. All materials are included. It’s best to bring your own sewing machine, but you may also borrow one of ours. Please note if bringing your own sewing machine it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. If you’re attending with your child, and participating only as support, just purchase 1 enrollment. Adults and age 7+ (with adult) welcome! REQUIREMENT: If you are new to using a sewing machine, you must take Family & Beginner Sewing 101 first. Join instructor Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. An additional supply fee of $10 (cash only) is due to instructor at the workshop. It includes pre-fused adornments plus jewelry findings for up to 3 items (excluding leather for bracelets/belts). Additional findings, chains, cording, and leather for bracelets and belts will also be available for cash purchase. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up. As George’s memoir "All Boys Aren’t Blue" has reached massive success as a New York Times bestseller, it has become the American Library Association’s third most challenged book of 2021. But with each shove, George continues to persevere and advocate for Black and queer voices. “Black storytelling has often been banned,” George says, “My book is a tool so that Black queer kids and LGBTQ teens can see themselves, and read about themselves, and learn about themselves.” In this talk, George speaks on the importance of sharing diverse stories: why we should remain resilient, how representation in media can support young adults’ mental and physical health and what we can do to support these voices. By listening to one another and understanding the history, language and actions necessary to change the world, we can form a community where we are all free to be our true, authentic selves. The author will be signing books shortly after the event.
