Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings. Recognized as one of America’s most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell has contributed to the work of a staggering array of collaborators, including Paul Motian, John Zorn, Elvis Costello, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Rickie Lee Jones, Vinicius Cantuária, Marianne Faithfull, John Scofield, Bono, and Brian Eno, to name only a few. This work has established Frisell as one of the most sought-after guitar voices in contemporary music. Omar Sosa Quarteto Americanos | Athenaeum Jazz The spring series opens on Thursday, March 27, at Scripps Research with a long-anticipated local debut as a leader of acclaimed Cuban composer-pianist-bandleader Omar Sosa and his Quarteto Americanos, featuring Josh Jones on drums, Ernesto Mazar Kindelán on bass, and Sheldon Brown on sax, clarinet, and flute. Sosa is widely celebrated as one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today. His musical trajectory traces the African diaspora from Cuba to Brazil; from Central America to Ecuador’s African-descent communities; from San Francisco and New York to his current home base in Barcelona. True to his Afro-Cuban origins, Sosa fashions a spirited vision of uncompromising artistic generosity that embraces humanity at large. Nominated for seven Grammy awards and twice for the BBC World Music Awards, Sosa received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C., for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States. The New York Times wrote, “Sosa's music is the unifying sort, yoking together Africa and jazz and Latin America and hip-hop. He makes it work, being one of those rare birds whose keyboard skills are near those of Chick Corea and Chucho Valdes.” Billboard commented, “Sosa is one of the truly illuminated minds of world jazz. From the KPBS San Diego weekend arts preview: Visual art | Saturday is the monthly Barrio Art Crawl, where galleries, shops, restaurants and the sidewalks come alive with art and culture. Highlights this weekend include the spooky season installment of the Logan Ave. Artisan Market, which runs from noon to 6 p.m. near the VFW. Then, at Bread & Salt in Logan Heights, check out a risograph print pop-up from artist Philip Brun Del Re and new work in the Quint ONE space by Lisa Sigal. The Thanksgiving season is upon us. Lots of cooking and cleaning. Relatives and friends gathering together. It's a busy time of year for all of us. Would you like to take a 3-hour break doing something fun and creative? Something peaceful? In this workshop, we will do large drawings using salt on black poster board, and coffee on white butcher paper. Working from black and white reference photos provided by the instructor, you will learn some fundamental drawing techniques. These are temporary - you won't take anything home except some knowledge, and photos of your drawings. This is a meditative process that is an interesting antidote to the chaos of the holiday season. Materials: All supplies are provided—just bring your phone to take photos. She teaches for art retreats and workshops in Southern California, specializing in life drawing, portrait, and still-life drawing classes for adults and teens. Escondido Choral Arts presents The Center Chorale, combined with full symphony orchestra, guests Pacific Coast Chorale, and soloists, will perform Ode to Joy, from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in celebration of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of this great work. "This kiss is for the whole world" translated from the Ninth, moves us today as we listen to the interplay between the instruments and the chorus. Also programmed will be works by Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, and Faure, some of your Great Composers throughout history. Conductor John Nettles, Guest Conductor Diego Guerra, and soloists Caroline Nelms, Maria Caughey, and DeAndre Simmons will be performing in the beautiful California Center for the Arts, Escondido's Center Theater.
