Still-life painting is the study of everyday objects that take on a new life, tell a story and can act as a portal to another place or time. Emphasis in this class will be on an impressionist technique of painting using an alla prima (wet into wet) style of painting, keeping loose brushwork, thick paint, and eliminating detail. We will cover composition, color, form, and lighting. There will be a setup for each class along with photo images to create from. I do a painting demonstration in each class. One of our exercises will be a personal still life using objects that have meaning for us. The best part is that we will have fun as we share our discoveries together. Come join us! Please include Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light (cool yellow), Cadmium Yellow (warm yellow), Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Viridian Green or Phthalo Green—plus any colors of paint that you would like to use. Brushes: Bring a variety of brushes for your choice of paints that include #2, #4, #6, #8. Good quality brushes make a difference. Other materials: 12” x16” paper palette pad; odorless Turpenoid and linseed oil for oils; soft vine charcoal; 1.5- or 2-inch palette knife; paper towels; two small jars with lids; spray bottle for acrylic painters; sketchbook; color pencils; four canvas or canvas boards, 11” x 14” or your preference. Join a panel of scientific and artistic thinkers for a deep look at the roles of fungi on the planet and microscopic elements within complex systems. The visiting Treseder Lab of UC Irvine examines fungi’s layered relationship to planetary life and discusses how fungi mediate and connect distant ecosystems. David Familian introduces life webs and AI as complex systems, a topic that comes to focus in the art exhibition, "Future Tense: Art, Complexity, and Uncertainty." Artists in residence with the Beall Center’s Black Box Projects working with the Treseder Lab, art collective Cesar & Lois introduce their ecosystem-based artwork that articulates fungal respiration and bioelectric signaling. Moving across perspectives in art and science, the panelists reframe how we picture the planet. Scientists from The Treseder Lab include Dr. Kathleen Treseder and researchers Eduardo Misael Choreno Parra and Melanie Taleen Hacopian. In this comprehensive class, students will learn the intricate art of staining porcelain and using colored clay to craft stunning patterns and one-of-a-kind pieces. The class will cover all aspects of the technique from coloring and preparing porcelain, learning how to build a variety of patterns and learning how to form and structure pieces. This course is designed for both beginners and intermediate ceramic enthusiasts incorporating a selection of hand-building techniques as well as tips for wheel-throwing with the patterns. Set sail for an evening of raucous adventure and rollicking laughter as Grossmont College Theatre Arts presents "The Pirates of Penzance!" This timeless comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan will sweep audiences off their feet with its infectious melodies, zany characters, and madcap wit. Directed and choreographed by Melissa Glasgow, with musical direction by Patrick Marion, "The Pirates of Penzance" will run March 20-27 at Grossmont College’s Performing & Visual Arts Center Stage.
