Beyond Land Acknowledgments Workshop Tuesday, Nov. 19 | 1-3 p.m. | Intertribal Resource Center (SSC 187) Beyond Land Acknowledgements, led by ITRC Coordinator Michaela Allen Sanchez (Lipan Apache and Mexican-American), is an engaging and introspective workshop aimed at moving beyond traditional land acknowledgments towards fostering genuine support and allyship for Native students and communities at UC San Diego and beyond. In this session, participants will delve into critical discussions about their positionalities and explore departmental protocols to identify opportunities for growth and advocacy. Through interactive activities and guided reflections, participants will develop a deeper understanding of creating tangible forms of support. By the end of the workshop, attendees will walk away equipped with actionable items to enact positive change for the betterment of Native communities within their spheres of influence. The Intertribal Resource Center is located on the 1st floor of the Student Services Center in SSC Room #187. We are located at the corner of Rupertus Way and Myers Drive, south of Price Center East. Every November, UC San Diego recognizes and celebrates the achievements, cultures, and contributions of Native American people and tribes during Native American Heritage Month. The UC San Diego community greatly respects the land and the Kumeyaay people of the area where our campus is located. We acknowledge their tremendous contributions to our region and thank them for their stewardship.

Transformed into a bustling marketplace, the Bazaar del Mundo Shops will welcome talented artists from Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador and other Latin American countries to showcase authentic Mexican folk art, traditional clothing and textiles, San Diego’s largest collection of authentic Mata Ortiz pottery and so much more, including live musical entertainment. Guests will also enjoy watching live demonstrations by artists skilled in traditional crafts such as woodcarving, painting and weaving. The documentary features the impact of service-dog agency K9s For Warriors on the lives of three American veterans struggling with trauma sustained in service overseas. Founded by Shari Duval and her son Brett Simon, who served two tours in Iraq, K9s For Warriors matches veterans Adam, Shilo and Louis with companion dogs. Each learns to manage issues such as flashbacks, hypervigilance, and invisible psychological damage.

Prix Pictet Human showcases work from twelve international shortlisted photographers: Hoda Afshar, Iran Gera Artemova, Ukraine Ragnar Axelsson, Iceland Alessandro Cinque, Italy/Peru Siân Davey, UK Federico Ríos Escobar, Colombia Gauri Gill, India Michał Łuczak, Poland Yael Martínez, Mexico Richard Renaldi, US Vanessa Winship, UK/Bulgaria Vasantha Yogananthan, France The shortlisted portfolios span documentary, portraiture, landscape, and studies of light and process, and explore issues ranging from the plight of Indigenous peoples, conflict, childhood, the collapse of economic processes, to the traces of human habitation and industrial development, gang violence, border lands, and migration. Their work evaluates our role as stewards of the planet and sheds light on the critical issues of global sustainability, the central concern of the Prix Pictet since its inception 15 years ago. The Prix Pictet aims to uncover photographs that communicate important messages about global environmental and social issues within the broad theme of sustainability. Photographers are nominated and a jury selects the shortlist and winner for each cycle and theme. The Prix Pictet jury is comprised of a group of leading experts in the visual arts from around the world including directors of major museums and galleries as well as journalists and critics. They lead the global search for images of high artistic quality and narrative power and fit the theme of a particular cycle.
