After a successful introduction in 2024, Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista is bringing back a special "Pink & Popcorn" night marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a signature pink themed outdoor screening of "Wicked," paired with educational booths on local women's and breast health services, a special "Warrior Wall" honoring and remembering breast cancer patients and survivors and more. The free outdoor screening of this worldwide hit will be held Tuesday, October 7 at 7 p.m. in the center's Dining Pavilion. Starting at 5 p.m. that evening, guests can enjoy a live DJ spinning retro tunes, a "Power of Pink" themed photo booth, giveaways and prizes from Otay Ranch Town Center merchants and more. The center will be providing a variety of additional patio seating options; alcohol is not permitted. Key to the evening's lineup is the opportunity to spread awareness about vital services available from La Maestra Community Health Centers and their "Every Woman Counts" program and early detection awareness education from The Helen Knoll Foundation. Both organizations will host information stations with details on all locally available women's, family, cancer and other health services. The center will also host a "Warrior Wall" benefitting the Helen Knoll Foundation for the entire month of October with residents welcome to place a commemorative personalized pink ribbon to signify either someone currently battling breast cancer, a survivor or a loved one unfortunately lost to the disease. "Last year we were thrilled to create a new event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month harnessing the power of accessible education and a celebration of the warriors in this fight, while also bringing attention to the power of pink, hope and community when it comes to fighting this disease," said Otay Ranch Town Center General Manager Tim Kilcourse. "We welcome all our neighbors to come join us in a celebratory and uplifting event at the heart of our true town center," he added. Guests can begin sitting in provided seating in the Dining Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to partake in food from the weekly Farmers Market or take out from any number of the center's dining tenants. Join Linda Cassady for a journey into the literary wonderland of Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, through the treasured Cassady Carroll Collection of USC's Special Collections. This engaging lecture explores how a remarkable book collection has inspired students to discover the genius behind Alice's adventures, transforming some into artists in their own right. Discover the extensive works by and about Lewis Carroll housed in the University of Southern California Special Collections, and learn how an innovative Wonderland Award competition sparks the imagination of Southern California students as they pursue and rediscover Dodgson's legacy. Come see how students tumble down their own rabbit holes of creativity, finding Alice in the wonderland of their own imaginations through art, literature, and scholarly exploration. The Carroll Collection The Cassady Lewis Carroll Collection was established in 2000 and has grown to contain more than 6,000 rare books, pamphlets, letters, and other items related to the work of Lewis Carroll including inscribed editions, books from Carroll‘s own library, and many works by major illustrators of the Alice stories. There are signed copies of movie scripts, playbills from stage adaptations, Victorian-era playing cards, and pop-up books. More recently, comic books, graphic novels, manga editions, literary parodies, computer games, movies, and original art work related to Carroll and his Alice books are part of the collection. The Wonderland Award The Annual Wonderland Award is an annual multidisciplinary competition at the University of Southern California that encourages new scholarship and creative work related to Lewis Carroll. A primary goal is to promote use of the G. Edward Cassady, M.D., and Margaret Elizabeth Cassady, R.N., Lewis Carroll Collection, held in Doheny Library at USC. Since 2005, about 600 students have reimagined, reinterpreted, and remixed Carroll’s stories. Submissions include film and screenplays; poetry and readings; short fiction; book art [writing desks, boxes of wonder, missing diaries]; music, lyrics, scores, and performances; art [photography, painting, digital art, art installations]; ballet and dance; golf courses, board and digital games [with music, readings, and polysyllogisms]; illustrated novels; arts and crafts [dolls, ceramic tea sets, and fashion], and scholarly essays. Linda Cassady and her husband, George Cassady, MD, gifted a Lewis Carroll Collection to the University of Southern California in 2000. Her area of "collecting” Carroll is as a sponsor and judge of the Wonderland Award, an annual multidisciplinary competition that encourages new scholarship and creative work related to Lewis Carroll. A Night of Flamenco Music and Dance with Caminos Flamencos Featuring Master Guitarist Jason McGuire and Emmy Winning Dancer/ Choreographer Yaelisa with Special Guest Vocalists & Dancers Reyes Barrios and Stephanie Pedraza An evening of traditional flamenco with internationally recognized masters in the art of flamenco. Caminos Flamencos led by Jason and Yaelisa have produced some of the most creatively innovative productions in flamenco dance and music on the West Coast, influencing the development of flamenco across the U.S. and bringing some of Spain’s greatest artists to stages in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orange County and throughout the Coast. Yaelisa curated the very first international flamenco festival in California, the New World Flamenco Festival, from 2001-2015 which set the stage for other festivals that followed in her footsteps. This power duo continues to delve deeply into the art as they have done for 30 years, with Jason now a masterful luthier building custom flamenco guitars, and one he will play this evening. Their time in the Bay Area was incredibly prolific, in both training and creating new artists to this genre, and in the level and depth of their many performances. They are thrilled to bring with them a San Diego-based artist, singer/dancer Reyes Barrios, originally from Sevilla, and Stephanie Pedraza, a Canadian flamenco artist travelling on the Coast.
