  • For centuries the skill of recording scenery, subjects, and historical events through hand-crafted artworks were relied upon by society to understand the imagery associated with the civilized and uncivilized world around them. That skill evolved over time as devoted artists strived to depict their images as closely as possible to the real thing, setting new standards for artists that would last forever. Art Scene West wants to celebrate this genre of Realism and the contemporary masters who carry on that tradition. Head to our gallery and experience Realism like never before! Gallery Hours: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday-Sunday Visit: https://www.artscenewest.com/exhibition-of-realism-submissions Art Scene West Gallery on Facebook / Instagram
  • Participants will learn the process of relief printmaking. Printmaking is an artistic process based on the principle of transferring images from a matrix onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. Traditional printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography, while modern artists have expanded available techniques to include screen printing. Participants will have the opportunity to create multiple prints of different colors and participate in aspects of “social practice” in which artworks serve to create community spaces through sharing and trading. *Seniors, use CODE: SENIOR10 to get $10 off of this workshop! • Join us in celebrating Women’s History Month as we honor the incredible contributions of women in the rich history of marine plankton research at Scripps. This Perspectives Lecture will feature two fascinating presentations highlighting the inspiration for "Mosaic Ocean," an innovative art/science installation blending traditional and cutting-edge technology essential to observing these small but incredibly important ocean dwellers. Judit Hersko will perform part of her innovative series of visual narratives, Pages from the Book of the "Unknown Explorer," transporting you to Scripps’ early days through a cleverly imagined correspondence between Dr. Easter Cupp, Scripps' first female PhD graduate, and a fictitious female explorer inspired by Hersko's research and field experience in Antarctica. Melissa Carter will then take us on a journey through nearly a century of observations from Scripps Pier, bringing us to the present day. She’ll provide an insider’s look at emerging research and observational technologies used on the Pier and explore how these innovations drive new, groundbreaking discoveries in marine plankton research. Seating is limited and lectures often sell out, so advanced registration is strongly recommended. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the lecture begins at 7 p.m. Visit: https://aquarium.ucsd.edu/events/perspectives-lecture-series-march Birch Aquarium at Scripps on Instagram and Facebook
