Join us in celebrating Women’s History Month as we honor the incredible contributions of women in the rich history of marine plankton research at Scripps. This Perspectives Lecture will feature two fascinating presentations highlighting the inspiration for "Mosaic Ocean," an innovative art/science installation blending traditional and cutting-edge technology essential to observing these small but incredibly important ocean dwellers. Judit Hersko will perform part of her innovative series of visual narratives, Pages from the Book of the "Unknown Explorer," transporting you to Scripps’ early days through a cleverly imagined correspondence between Dr. Easter Cupp, Scripps' first female PhD graduate, and a fictitious female explorer inspired by Hersko's research and field experience in Antarctica. Melissa Carter will then take us on a journey through nearly a century of observations from Scripps Pier, bringing us to the present day. She’ll provide an insider’s look at emerging research and observational technologies used on the Pier and explore how these innovations drive new, groundbreaking discoveries in marine plankton research. Seating is limited and lectures often sell out, so advanced registration is strongly recommended. On Sunday, February 16, 2025 mycophiles, educators, chefs, supportive businesses and dedicated mushroom amateurs, enthusiasts and professionals will gather at our Annual Fungus Fair in San Diego’s Balboa Park, continuing our mission to help educate our community, exchanging knowledge and celebrating all things fungi. The San Diego Mycological Society was established in 1997 and our group gathers for the many facets of fungi such as culinary, cultivation, identification, photography and art, ecology and more. We have monthly seminars, conduct classes, lead forays to find mushrooms, assist in mushroom identification, and share joy in commensality at member potlucks and chef prepared full course mushroom dinners. Concert Hour is a music enrichment series presented on the campus of Palomar College for our students, staff, and community by the Palomar College Performing Arts Department. Enjoy a range of exciting artists and musicians in the beautiful Howard Brubeck Theatre or Performance Lab D-10. The program is presented weekly during the Fall and Spring Semesters at 1 p.m. and ends at approximately 2 p.m. Admission and Parking are FREE. This Week’s Performing Arts Will Be Located in Performance Lab D -10 Peter Gach is a pianist of wide-ranging musical interests based in San Diego. His repertoire extends from the complete Well-Tempered Clavier, Vol. II of JS Bach, to contemporary works written especially for him. He has premiered works by SoCal composers and actively commissions new music for the piano. He is also Professor Emeritus at Palomar College, where he was Chairperson of the Performing Arts Department and Artist in Residence in Piano. In retirement, he initiated a fund-raising campaign for the Steinway Concert Grand in the College’s renovated Performing Arts Complex. It is named the Peter Gach Steinway in his honor. His book Perfect Practice/Perfect Performance: A Handbook for Musicians at Work and Onstage, is available for download. Filled with practical advice and based on years of experience in both teaching developing musicians and personal experience, it offers real, time-tested solutions to the challenges of practicing and performing.
