This presentation will feature California-based artist Ala Ebtekar, whose multifaceted practice reflects intellectual, material, and technological research into the history of image making across cultures, and has involved light, painting, drawing, ceramic, text, alternative photography, public projects, and pedagogical initiatives in the United States, United Arab Emirates, and Iran. In conversation with SDMA’s curator of South Asian and Islamic art, Ebtekar will discuss his artistic practice through a selection of work from the past fifteen years, including three important pieces currently on display in the Museum’s galleries of the Arts of Iran and the Americas, and a major commission for the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Ebtekar and Akbarnia will also share some preliminary thoughts about the artist’s upcoming commission for SDMA’s 2024 exhibition, Wonders of Creation: Art, Science, and the Islamic World, on the intersection of art, science, and Islam.
