Illume Speaker Series Knapp Lecture On James Baldwin: Racial Progress without Redemption Melvin L. Rogers, PhD | Knapp Chair of Liberal Arts Thursday, February 27, at 6 p.m. IPJ Theatre, Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice The lecture invites the audience to travel back to the 1960s and to think through the assumptions that frame our discussion about racial progress. Baldwin asks us to disentangle our preoccupation with redemption to achieve democratic progress. Advancing democracy through dialogue may mean we don’t completely forget our missteps and trauma. Advancing democracy may involve figuring out how to dialogue, given that the past and present trauma may persist. Melvin L. Rogers, PhD, is the Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Political Science and associate director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Brown University. Featuring thirteen new songs, an analog synthesizer driven score, an all-puppet cast, more multimedia elements than you can shake a stick at, and a wickedly stylish 1980s visual aesthetic, "ROBOPOCALYPSE: The Musical!" is Puppeteers for Fears’ most ambitious show ever, and is sure to dazzle and astonish. Puppeteers for Fears is an Oregon-based comedy troupe, specializing in original horror and science fiction rock’n’roll musicals performed with puppets. The company was founded as a one-night-only cabaret show for Halloween 2015, but was so popular that it kept going and never looked back. In the time since, PFF has written and performed a half-dozen original feature musicals covering everything from supernatural monsters to killer robots to lonely sasquatches, performed all over the US on six tours, and sold out venues nationwide with its innovative and hilarious combination of puppetry, video, and live music. Two Another are Eliot Porter and Angus Campbell, a musical duo originating from Sydney, Australia. Their kaleidoscopic mix of Electronic, Alternate RnB, Indie Pop and Soul has been heard across the globe since joining forces in 2015, amassing a following of over 1.8 million monthly listeners and over 400 million streams to date, with tour dates spanning across Europe, the Americas, the UK and back home in Australia. Now based in Europe, the band’s global origin story lies under the Australian sun with Eliot and Angus meeting in their high school music program where they were taught audio production by hometown dance-music-icons Bag Raiders. The pair quickly bonded over a mutual love of D’Angelo, Daft Punk and Danger Mouse. “Growing up in that golden era of indie, Ed Banger and French Touch, we shared a love of 90s electronica, dance and hip hop, and our parent’s Motown records,” says Angus, “There was a lot to be inspired by.” The duo’s recordings have since gone on to achieve significant success, accumulating hundreds of millions of streams of their EPs "Another Tape" and "Two Sides," followed by their debut album "Back To Us." Everyone in the community is invited to attend Wings of Hope, hosted by The Elizabeth Hospice, on Sunday, April 27, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event will take place at the California Center for the Arts, located at 340 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Attendees will have the opportunity to honor and celebrate the special people who have touched their lives. Admission is free. Attendees will receive a butterfly for release, listen to live music, hear uplifting messages from The Elizabeth Hospice’s grief support team, and enjoy sweet treats. The Elizabeth Hospice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit healthcare leader, has been providing hospice care, palliative care and grief support services to children and adults in San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County since 1978. The organization’s highly trained grief counselors help children and adults understand their feelings and thoughts and guide them through the process of coping with the death of a loved one. Grief support services are available to everyone in the community, including those who do not have a patient affiliation with The Elizabeth Hospice. No one needing these services has ever been turned away for financial reasons. In support of the organization’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested to reserve a Painted Lady Butterfly.
