Rap Diego: An Audio Documentary uncovers the untold story of a significant music revolution in San Diego. It chronicles the underground rap movement that launched numerous artists into the spotlight and fostered a subculture that ultimately became mainstream and influential worldwide. This narrative unfolds in four acts, narrated by those who experienced it firsthand—producer Parker Edison; editor Chris Reyes; and cultural attaché J. Smith. Audiences will have the opportunity to hear early music and performances that have rarely, if ever, been heard by the public.

Concert Hour is a music enrichment series presented on the campus of Palomar College for our students, staff, and community by the Palomar College Performing Arts Department. Enjoy a range of exciting artists and musicians in the beautiful Howard Brubeck Theatre or Performance Lab D-10. The program is presented weekly during the Fall and Spring Semesters at 1 p.m. and ends at approximately 2 p.m. Admission and Parking are FREE. This Week’s Performing Arts Will Be Located in Performance Lab D -10 Paul Tseng and Ching-Ming Cheng **Paul Tseng (cello) has performed in venues such as Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Cairo Royal Opera House. He holds a master’s and bachelor’s Degree from Juilliard, and a Doctorate from the Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins University specializing in Prokofiev’s cello music. Paul has served as principal cellist for various professional orchestras and holds degrees from the Juilliard School. He has taught in multiple colleges and while performing as a recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist. As a founding member of the Logos Trio and artistic director of the San Diego Music Society, he oversees the Music by the Sea Concert Series in Encinitas, CA and the Intimate Classics Concert Series at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Dr. Ching-Ming Cheng (piano) professor and chair of the Music Department at CSU San Marcos, has been recognized with the Top Music Teacher Award from Steinway & Sons annually since 2016 and was inducted into their Teacher Hall of Fame in 2023. Originally from Taiwan, she began playing piano at five and has won several competitions, including a silver medal in the International Keyboard Odyssiad Piano Competition. Dr. Cheng holds degrees from National Taiwan Normal University and the University of Miami. An active performer, she has toured internationally and performed with various symphonies. She is also a dedicated faculty member, helping to expand the music department at CSUSM and establishing the first All-Steinway School in the region. By the time Avi Kaplan launched his solo career with 2017's "Sage and Stone", he'd already built an audience that stretched across the globe, racking up three GRAMMY Awards as a member of the platinum-selling vocal group, Pentatonix. As the group's profile continued to climb though, Avi knew he needed to return to his own artistic foundation — to the organic roots, country and soul music that had provided the soundtrack to his upbringing in rural California. Now, following 2020’s well-received EP, "I’ll Get By" and 2022’s highly acclaimed LP, "Floating On A Dream" (produced by Shooter Jennings), Avi is set to release "Feel Alright", a new 5-track EP on Fantasy Records that further showcases his extraordinary artistic ability. Produced by Kaplan along with Reid Leslie (Devon Gilfillian), "Feel Alright" blends modern sounds with classic influences into something inventive, fresh and wholly original. The new music is the start of a busy 2024 for the celebrated singer-songwriter. Between mid-May and mid-June, Avi will visit 16 cities on a tour across the U.S., with confirmed dates in the UK and Europe set for September. Guthrie Brown, a Nashville transplant by way of "old Montana" began playing the guitar at age six. By the age of seventeen, he journeyed to Nashville to pursue the dream of being a professional songwriter, recording & performing artist. After settling in Music City, he recorded and produced his first self-titled EP, which got the attention of Nashville's premiere independent radio station, WRLT Lightning 100. Capitalizing on the initial success of his debut EP, Guthrie recorded and released his second EP "Spirit of the Elk" with producer Stuart Mathis (The Wallflowers, Lucinda Williams). Following his second release, he recruited his longtime friends and musicians John Ogelby (drums), Will Honaker (bass, keys) and John McNally (guitar) to join the band.
