Born in Riverside, Calif., to Mexican parents, Cornejo epitomizes the modern música mexicana artist. He has embraced the traditional instruments, including the requinto and other acoustic guitars, that have long powered the regional Mexican sound, but has also given the enduring genre an alternative edge, incorporating electric guitars and darker, emo-like lyrics for a sad sierreño approach that has connected with his young and zealous fan base. “A lot of my influences came from regional Mexican, but it is hard to just identify as just that,” says Cornejo, who broke out in 2021 with his first single, “Está Dañada (She Is Damaged),” which landed him a No. 1 entry on Billboard’s Latin Songwriters chart dated Oct. 30, 2021, while also becoming the second regional Mexican song to appear on the all-genre Hot 100. “All the genres that I listen to, like country and rock, have inspired me. This Saturday, the CPMCC will present the work of Macedonio Arteaga Jr.'s work in our newest Community Gallery Artist installation. Artist Statement: Macedonio Arteaga Jr. is a visionary artist, educator, and community leader whose work bridges cultural heritage, social justice, and artistic expression. As the founder and artistic director of Teatro Izcalli, a Chicano comedy troupe, Macedonio uses humor and storytelling to challenge stereotypes, amplify underrepresented voices, and foster cultural pride. His creative work extends beyond the stage, with published plays and poetry that inspire new generations to find their own artistic voices. Through decades of dedicated service, Macedonio has brought the transformative power of the arts to underserved communities. He has served as an Artist-in-Residence at the Sherman Heights Community Center and the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, creating opportunities for others to engage with and grow through the arts. His initiatives, such as “Círculo de Hombres,” have addressed critical social issues like violence prevention, mentorship, and cultural awareness in schools. Recognized with prestigious honors, including the California Arts Council Legacy Artist Award in 2021, Macedonio’s contributions to the arts and culture are now celebrated at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, which is proud to host his first museum art installation. Whether you’re a beginner or intending to deepen your relationship, all are welcome to experience the world of clay in this fun and friendly environment. By focusing on techniques to confidently create functional and aesthetic pottery, we will learn creative design, how to throw on the wheel, trimming and glazing! Monday – Friday, April 14 – 18, from 1p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 welcome! Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your child will explore seasonal crafts through a variety of mediums such as woodworking, ceramics and fiber arts! Along the way, we’ll make fun, high-quality crafts kids can take home. Our projects are geared to build and hone skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, comprehension + exploration of a variety of materials. Projects and depth of craft exploration are matched up to the child’s age and ability. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station, and they’re camp is ending as ours begins, we are happy to walk your child from their camp to the studio.
