Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this workshop, participants will deepen their character work and learn how to craft a compelling memoir scene complete with description, details and dialogue that will bring the written word to life. A deeper understanding of the two voices of memoir will be explored; the voice of innocence and the voice of experience. Participants will gain a strong understanding of how and when to create real, conversational dialogue and utilize flashbacks. Tools to communicate clarity of character will be taught to bring the people in the story to life for the reader. Participants will be encouraged to submit another chapter of their work for peer review. (Those following the certificate program will have 3-5 chapters written by the end of this class.) Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self. Characters and characterization make or break a novel, and as a writer, you must know not only how to construct a person from the ground up, but also how to skillfully relate that character to your readers through action and thought. This means that complicated backstories are not the be-all-end-all to characters. We need to understand the personalities within our writing. This process can be tricky, but it is a lot of fun. Once you have it down, you’ll never forget it. Applicable to comedy, drama, and reality, this unique course is designed for creative aspiring writers with no prior experience—as well as those with screenwriting experience—who seek to break into television writing. Learn in an interactive environment the basics of creating, writing, and presenting your first television script for both drama and/or comedy, including how to take your idea to the next step and create a complete half-hour or one-hour television script. Beginning and professional writers are welcome. Prior screenwriting experience is not required. The course will cover: - The steps usually taken for a first-time television writer towards writing the first script (general idea, character development, style, story acts, etc.) - Structure - Character development - The importance of your first script as a calling card - How to find an agent and get your script read - Who should you be writing for - Who does what job on a television series - The outlets for new shows and new ideas - Developing your idea - The best way to write for you - The Writers’ Room - Collaboration processes - Overview of winning past and current television show scripts - Feedback on your current concepts, outline, scenes and scripts Students will be emailed several TV scripts (shooting drafts) in PDF format prior to the first-class session (and more during the course) to be read in advance if possible. Filmmaker Charlie Shackleton was hot on the trail of the next great American true crime documentary—a riveting account of a highway patrolman’s quixotic effort to identify and capture the infamous Zodiac Killer.
