Teens ages 11+ can create a small rug from scratch! Rugs have a deep history as textile art and as objects that create specific spaces. Using handheld tufting machines, participants can create and design their rugs using colorful yarn. This is a two-part class! In this first session, learn how to create and translate a design for the medium, learn the basics of tufting, and begin filling in your designs. Our 21st concert season concludes with a special treat, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major. The soloist is David Savage, PSO’s Principal Bassoonist and one of San Diego’s most accomplished woodwind musicians. Mozart’s concerto is a rare gem, full of expressive range and technical brilliance that requires a true professional. Mr. Savage brings exactly the artistry and experience this piece demands. Virtuoso organist Jonas Nordwall performs popular standards on the Theatre Organ Society’s 4-manual, 24-rank “mighty Wurlitzer.” Nordwall is equally skilled in presenting both classical and popular music concerts. This concert will be a showcase of the Great American Songbook. The American Theatre Organ Society named Jonas Nordwall its Organist of the Year in 1987. He has served since 1971 as organist at the First United Methodist Church of Portland, Oregon, where he is Artistic Director of Music. He led the organist staff for ten years at Portland’s Organ Grinder Pizza restaurant and is the organist for the Oregon Symphony Orchestra. The self-titled album features drummer Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie, Perfume Genius, Fiona Apple). The Album and “How Do I” were nominated for Best Recording and Best Pop Song at San Diego Music Awards 2021 & 2022, respectively. “Southern Winds” earned Best Music Video at Dublin Web Fest. She began her songwriting days in San Diego during college, with three previous albums recorded and produced by Aaron Bowen. She has a large body of work and subcribers on her YouTube Channel, Luieland (29K subs), and continues to explore soundscapes with a cult following. After years of biopsies, best-selling author Sarah Thornton made the difficult decision to have a double mastectomy. But, after her reconstructive surgery, she was perplexed: What had she lost? And gained? An experienced sleuth, she resolved to venture behind the scenes to uncover the social and cultural significance of breasts. About 'Tits Up' Riotous and galvanizing, Tits Up excavates the diverse truths of mammary glands from the strip club to the operating room, from the nation’s oldest human milk bank to the fit rooms of bra designers. Thornton draws insights from plastic surgeons, lactation consultants, body-positive witches, lingerie models, and “free the nipple” activists to explore the status of breasts as emblems of femininity. She examines how women’s chests have become a billion-dollar business, as well as a stage for debates about race, class, gender, and desire. Everywhere she turns, Thornton encounters chauvinist myths about this elemental body part that quietly justify deficits in women’s bodily autonomy and endorse shortfalls in their political status. This remarkable journey underscores the inherent challenges that accompany our evolution, ultimately leading to a complete and awe-inspiring rebirth as a butterfly. In this soul-searching book arts workshop, we will engage in introspective guided writing prompts and indulgent improvisation to transform the enigmatic shifts in our lives into a book structure, handcrafted from a single sheet of paper. These creations will unfold like butterfly wings illustrated with found-imagery collage and text. By attuning to our hearts and quieting our minds, these collaged books will help us make sense of our life experiences.
