High Tech Elementary 5th Graders present Cause for Paws Adoption Event on Saturday, January 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at NTC Park in Liberty Station. Students have been challenged to create an awareness and fundraising campaign by building dog houses and cat condos, raising funds through student designed calendars, advertising, and hosting an event. “I love this project because it gives the students an authentic reason to research, write, and do math, all while they are engaged in designing and building these amazing structures to help rescue animals. The students have worked so hard to bring this project to its fruition and I believe it's going to be a beautiful event this Saturday,” said Jeff Govoni, 5th grade teacher at HTe. The event will feature local animal shelters, including Animal Pad and Whiskers Without Borders where they can both adopt pets and learn about ways to volunteer or support as well as a special appearance by Shorty Rossi, philanthropist and Pit Bull / Bully Rights Activist. Students will display their custom build dog houses and cat condos. In addition, students will share what they learned throughout the process. Plus, attendees can bring animal supplies to participate in a raffle for prizes (one raffle ticket per pet supplies item; all pet supplies will be donated to your shelters). Additionally, you can get your own pet caricature with locally renowned artist Marco. In attendance will be our seventy 5th graders, their families, and other family and friends from our High Tech Community. High Tech Elementary’s mission is to create a school community where students achieve more than they think possible, becoming active contributors to building a better world and teachers can fulfill their highest aspirations.

Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! April 13 & 14 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. both days In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: - Carving safety - Honing/sharpening - Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood - Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle - Carving out the handle - Sanding the spoon and handle Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Poetry, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this final workshop of the Certificate in Poetry program, the student will concentrate on the design of a publishable manuscript. The student will continue workshopping poems, reading and analyzing books of poetry, providing valuable comment and feedback on each other’s manuscripts. Further, the student will discover publishing sources for individual poems and contests for chapbook and complete book manuscripts, the necessary recordkeeping for this endeavor, and practice how to give a professional poetry reading. For students not ready to compile a manuscript, each class also includes a writing prompt, short lesson or introduction to a poet, and a read & critique session. Each participant will choose one poetry craft book and submit by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Students will prepare a number of copies of their completed manuscript for distribution to the other students at the end of class three. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop for both individual poems and manuscripts. Objectives: - Upon completion of this workshop, you will have: - Finalized the formation of a publishable manuscript - Developed a poetry record-keeping procedure - Submitted poems to three different publications - Participated in a read and critique of student manuscripts - Practiced giving a professional poetry reading - Read and analyzed one book of poetry craft Week 1: Introduction to Poetry V. Review tips for evaluating a book of poetry, poem critique, workshop etiquette. Where to send your poems and manuscript. Read and critique workshop if time allows. Homework: Pick/order your one poetry craft book. Begin to craft/organize your poems for the manuscript you will distribute to students at class end, week three. Come and explore the gorgeous natural blue of indigo in this perfect-for-summer workshop. Students will learn a range of shibori dye resist processes in this hands-on, creative workshop, including tegumo (spiderweb), ori nui (stitched), and itajime (clamped) shibori methods. We will be using a natural indigo vat to dye a bamboo scarf and better understand the process and symbiotic relationship with indigo dye and this traditional textile surface design. Students will acquire the basic techniques to continue their journey into creating beautiful, unique textiles. This class is appropriate for ages 12+ years old.
