Part of the City of San Diego's OnView Local Arts Program, this delightful exhibition features artist Jane Muschenetz's award-winning palm frond animal masks. Using repurposed and eco-friendly materials, Muschenetz transforms palm frond bark that sheds during San Diego's windy storms into vivid and expressive creatures that enchant kids and adults alike. Paired with whimsical animal poems, the artwork brings something joyful and unexpected to brighten the day, capture the imagination, and inspire creativity in all of us. The series concludes on Wednesday, March 19, with the local debut of the Avishai Cohen Quartet, featuring Cohen on trumpet, Yonathan Avishai on piano, Barak Mori on bass, and Ziv Ravitz on drums. Cohen is globally recognized as a player-composer open to multiple strains of jazz and active as a leader, co-leader, and sideman. Aside from the acclaimed work with his quartet, he has also recorded and toured as part of the Mark Turner Quartet, the SFJAZZ Collective, and the 3 Cohens Sextet—with his sister, clarinetist-saxophonist Anat, and brother, saxophonist Yuval. In 2024, Cohen released his newest album, Ashes to Gold (ECM Records), a deeply introspective and richly textured exploration of life’s transitions and renewal. The album showcases Cohen’s ability to blend lyrical beauty with technical brilliance, further solidifying his reputation as an innovator in contemporary jazz. Named as Artistic Director of the International Jerusalem Festival, Cohen has also been voted as a Rising Star on three consecutive occasions in the DownBeat Critics Poll. "Summer of Soul" documentary (2021, PG-13, 1h 58m) Friday, February 7 at 5 p.m. at the Carlsbad Dove Library This music documentary explores and reclaims the legacy of the six-week 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. It features unpublished footage of performances by Nina Simone, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, and Gladys Knight & the Pips at Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park).

Mondays, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. January 6–March 3 (no class January 20) (8 weeks, 24 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Working with a life model, students will learn to identify and depict the core “gesture” of any pose. Emphasis is on short poses with the goal of increasing our ability to capture the body in motion. By focusing on the “verb” of the pose, and not the “noun,” we will explore the storytelling potential of the figure. This is an excellent class for those interested in animation and the entertainment arts or for anyone looking to inject more dynamism into their life-drawing practice. This class is for all skill levels. Materials: Newsprint pad, 18” x 24”; compressed charcoal pencils; grease pencil. Other materials are possible with instructor consultation.
