Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. Combined, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is renowned Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber, whose genre-blending performances often include guitar Theremin and collaborations with artists from the California Guitar Trio to RYMO featuring Slightly Stoopid’s drummer Ryan Moran. The series concludes on Wednesday, March 19, with the local debut of the Avishai Cohen Quartet, featuring Cohen on trumpet, Yonathan Avishai on piano, Barak Mori on bass, and Ziv Ravitz on drums. Cohen is globally recognized as a player-composer open to multiple strains of jazz and active as a leader, co-leader, and sideman. Aside from the acclaimed work with his quartet, he has also recorded and toured as part of the Mark Turner Quartet, the SFJAZZ Collective, and the 3 Cohens Sextet—with his sister, clarinetist-saxophonist Anat, and brother, saxophonist Yuval. In 2024, Cohen released his newest album, Ashes to Gold (ECM Records), a deeply introspective and richly textured exploration of life’s transitions and renewal. The album showcases Cohen’s ability to blend lyrical beauty with technical brilliance, further solidifying his reputation as an innovator in contemporary jazz. Named as Artistic Director of the International Jerusalem Festival, Cohen has also been voted as a Rising Star on three consecutive occasions in the DownBeat Critics Poll. Plein air painting is an excellent way to observe color, light, and aerial perspective. This workshop focuses on composition and color mixing with a limited palette. Each day will begin with a demo and conclude with a group critique. The historic Spanish Baroque architecture and beautiful gardens of Balboa Park are an inspiring and congenial place to paint outdoors. All levels are welcome in this workshop. We will meet up in the Plaza Panama in front of the Timken Art Museum. Materials: portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, # 2, #4, #6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail #2–#4.
