"King: In the Wilderness" documentary (2018, TV-14, 1h 51m) Friday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Carlsbad Dove Library In honor of Black History Month this February, we are proud to present a documentary that explores the final months of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life. Dr. King's legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of American history over the past 70 years. This film provides an intimate look at his last months, marked by personal struggle and doubt, as he and his closest advisors wrestled with the belief that his role as a leading advocate for change had come to an end.

Mondays, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. January 6–March 3 (no class January 20) (8 weeks, 24 total hours of instruction) (Model included one day) La Jolla Studio In this class the face is the focus. Using different techniques and mediums, we will find fun ways to approach an often daunting subject. Students will be encouraged to bring photos of family, friends—even pets. We will discuss the best kinds of photos to use and how to use the ones you have even if they aren’t the best quality. There will be a model for one session, and we will try self-portraiture. This is an interesting way to improve your skills, find some new ones, and have fun while you are at it. Materials: A 9” x 12” pad of mixed-media paper; soft vine charcoal (willow is the best); woodless graphite pencil, 6B, 8B, or 9B (the higher the number the better); pencil sharpener; kneaded eraser. Other materials will be discussed in class, and the instructor will bring some supplies for students to try and share. Become a Master Composter! Join us at the beautiful Water Conservation Garden to gain in-depth composting knowledge to expand your sustainable gardening practices. You can earn a certificate of completion after attending all 5 weeks, then go on to receive the Master Composter certification and badge after completing the additional requirements! Meet new people in this fun, hands-on course. Class size is limited. Attendees must preregister. After completing this 5-week course you will have a better understanding of how to: * Minimize your carbon footprint and reduce your methane emissions by keeping food and yard waste out of the landfill. * Create natural nutrient-rich soil amendments with your food and yard waste that help your garden grow. * Avoid using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. * Reduce water use and increase water retention. Compost increases your soil’s water-holding capacity and improves water retention. The Master Composter course provides training in the art and science of composting through lectures, demonstrations, and a field trip. The course covers the following topics: * In-depth traditional composting and the basics of composting with worms (vermicomposting) * Compost bin building and troubleshooting (in teams!) * The microbiology of composting, including the role of fungi and bacteria * Bokashi fermentation for saving food scraps to compost * Macro decomposers in your compost pile * A tour of the Water Conservation Garden’s composting exhibit * The environmental impacts of composting * … and much more! Create a collage inspired by the materials and forms used by Artists in Residence, David Peña and Ethan Chan. Reflect your unique perspective on healing through layered textures and meaningful compositions of everyday objects. 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. | Performance by Ethan Chan In this durational performance piece by Ethan Chan, Ethan replicates the setting where his father spends his time when he’s unable to go to work. Ethan dresses up in his father’s daily at-home attire and traps himself in a space with nothing but his dad’s favorite food, a microwave, and a television, set to change channels every 10 seconds. In this space, the artist does not communicate with anyone or leave the room, and his only activities are sitting, eating, and watching TV. Thinking about the act of doomscrolling as a modern outlet for loneliness and boredom, a comparison can be drawn to the earlier act of channel-surfing. Constantly flicking through TV channels every few seconds for long periods of time results in both time passing and little to no entertainment or information being absorbed. As a kid, Ethan would sit with his dad (who identifies as a workaholic) on his days off at home while he channel-surfed. When Ethan once asked him why he did that for hours on end, he responded by saying, “what else am I going to do?”. 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. | Panel Discussion feat. Over the past decade, enrollment at San Diego County public schools has decline by about five percent. That means there are 27,000 fewer students in local schools. State officials are projecting rates of decline will only get worse, which will force educators to make some hard decisions.

Monday, February 17 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Ages 4-6 welcome! Taught by artist & designer Christine Gilpin, your preschool age child will explore collaging, color theory, sewing, weaving and fiber arts in our studio. We will explore through sensory activities, crafts and stories while developing fine motor skills. Littles learn best by doing and playing. We practice handwork and workplay. We “play” with natural objects and materials. Each project is planned so that children build skills while satisfying their need to explore. Projects are safe, non-toxic, and full of creativity. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station in the afternoon, and their camp begins as ours ends, we are happy to walk your child to their next camp.
