She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October, 2015. Their whole life is music. About The Zzymzzy Quartet Rhymes with "Whimsy" The guys from the Zzymzzy Quartet have simple ambitions: they just want to play it like it was when it was unamplified, melodic, swinging, dreamy, full of sly surprise. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: - Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals - Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals - Matt Gill - Clarinet - Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. The Maritime Museum of San Diego has created this popular sunset sail experience just for Cinco de Mayo weekend. Choose either Saturday or Sunday, May 4 & 5. We welcome ages 21+ to join us aboard the San Salvador, a replica of Explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo’s vessel, the first European to reach America’s West Coast in 1542. Enjoy Spanish guitar, custom tequila cocktails, light appetizers, all all while underway for a 2 hour cruise on the Bay aboard this lovely vessel representative of Spanish Pacific Heritage. San Salvador under the command of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, arrived at the port we now call San Diego on September 28, 1542, before proceeding further north in search of new trade routes that would link Mexico to Asia and Europe. She was the first recorded European vessel to sail along Southern California, and survey its coastline. The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture of our popular Wine & Lecture series as former CO of Naval Air Station North Island, David Landon, shares his knowledge about Coronado's naval history. The Navy's first aviator, Lieutenant Ellyson, and many other military personnel were trained at North Island starting in 1911. The station was granted official recognition as the "Birthplace of Naval Aviation" by a resolution of the House Armed Services Committee on August 15, 1963. From the military's aviation origins to geographical changes to North Island over time, David will share some of the many stories about the history and development of Naval Air Station North Island. David R. Landon David, a native of Guilford, Connecticut, graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1975 with a BS in Business Administration. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1976 and retired as a Captain in 2006 after 30 years on active duty. He has commanded HSL-51 in Atsugi Japan, HSL-41 in San Diego California, Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility in San Diego and Naval Base Coronado, which included NAS North Island, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, NALF San Clemente Island, the Silver Strand Training Complex, La Posta Mountain Warfare Training Complex and OLF Imperial Beach. Since retiring from the Navy, David has worked as the Chief Operating Officer and co-owner of Priority Solutions, a permanent placement- recruiting firm and as a Program Manager and leadership advisor for Scientific Applications International Corporation (SAIC). He assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Systems Technology Incorporated (STI) in 2011 and retired from STI in DEC 2017.
