Gira binacional - UC San Diego Ensamble Cepromusic José Luis Castillo, director artístico Karola Obermüller traverse Aaron Mencher FACE Alex Taylor figments Ignacio Baca Lobera De La Singularidad V The Center for Experimentation and Production of Contemporary Music (Cepromusic), the leading new music ensemble in Mexico, will make binational musical history this month by offering two concerts at the prestigious Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The performances, scheduled for January 30 and 31 at 7 p.m., will mark a milestone for Cepromusic, as they kick off their first international tour since the COVID 19 pandemic. Both concerts will be free and open to the public. Under the baton of their visionary artistic director José Luis Castillo, Cepromusic is proud to present "Translínea. Binational Tour 2024" – a groundbreaking series of concerts that not only celebrates the reemergence of international music making but also marks the ensemble's debut at the renowned UC San Diego venue and their first visit to the US West Coast ever. The tour also includes concerts in the neighboring Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, yet another first for the Mexico City-based ensemble. The concerts will feature a wide array of adventurous and diverse repertoire, aiming to build a musical bridge between contemporary Mexican composition and global new music. Highlights include works by German composer Karola Obermüller (her first-ever performance on campus since she was hired as a professor at UC San Diego), and by Mexican mavericks Ignacio Baca Lobera and Iván Naranjo. More importantly, Cepromusic will perform compositions by several of the talented graduate students of UC San Diego’s Department of Music – Aaron Mencher, Akari Komura, Alex Taylor, Jiyoung Ko, and Nasim Khorassani. These emerging composers contribute to the rich tapestry of new music, offering a glimpse into the future. The concerts will also feature works by globally acclaimed composers Rebecca Saunders and Liao Lin-Ni, embodying a collaborative spirit that transcends borders. This unique blend of pieces represents a harmonious fusion of cultures, bringing together the diverse influences one can find in the works of Mexican composers, UC San Diego students, and notable figures in the world of new music more broadly. The presentation by our section member Mehdi Sarram will start at 6 p.m. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the urgent situation faced by over 3.3 billion people who are highly vulnerable to climate change, emphasizing the need for immediate and impactful action. Central to this presentation is the exploration of nuclear power and various forms of renewable energy as pivotal solutions in the global effort to combat climate change. As the world's population is anticipated to reach 10 billion by 2050, the strategic shift from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources, particularly nuclear and renewables, is of utmost importance. The presentation will provide data on the efficiency and environmental impact of nuclear energy and renewable sources, covering aspects like CO2 emissions, capacity factors, mortality rates, and cost-effectiveness. The role of nuclear and renewable energies in mitigating recent environmental crises such as water scarcity and extreme weather events will also be a focus. Additionally, insights from the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in Dubai will be incorporated, highlighting global strategies involving nuclear and renewable energy. These insights will demonstrate the need for a shift in energy consumption patterns, especially among wealthier nations. About the Speaker | Mehdi Sarram is an esteemed nuclear engineer with a postgraduate degree from the University of Michigan (1967). His career began as a licensed Nuclear Reactor Operator with the US Atomic Energy Commission in 1963 and included a role as one of the Directors of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. He also served as an Associate Professor at the University of Tehran until 1979. In 1981, Sarram joined the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, before moving to the US in 1982 to work on various nuclear projects for companies like Raytheon, Duke Energy, and AREVA. His international experience includes working in ten countries and consulting for South Korea's KEPCO on the APR 1400 nuclear plant design. A 60-year member of the American Nuclear Society, Sarram was honored in 2023 for his contributions to the nuclear industry. He is the author of "Nuclear Lies, Deceptions, and Hypocrisies" (2015) and a regular lecturer on nuclear power and renewable energy at several universities and institutions. He has over 50 scientific publications to his name.
