Join us for a lecture by Olivia Zen Joseph, curator of "Layered Narratives," developed during their time at Mingei as the Quilt Fellow. This talk explores how quilts from the era and firsthand accounts of Black American experiences reframe the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition — the United States’ first World’s Fair. While the Centennial aimed to celebrate national identity and innovation, the lecture sheds light on the overlooked contributions and voices of Black women and the Black community, expanding understanding of this historic event through stories too often left untold. Olivia Zen Joseph is a Program Coordinator at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino and the curator of "Layered Narratives: Quilted Stories of Gender & Race at the 1876 Centennial." Drawn to interpretation, history, and storytelling, they are passionate about uncovering the complex meanings and histories embedded in art and objects. Olivia entered the museum field through an internship in Collections Management and Conservation at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Two exhibitions at Mingei International Museum celebrate Midcentury folk art, craft, and design. “Inside the Design Center” brings to life a vignette of mid-twentieth century interior, lighting, and furniture design from Ilse Ruocco’s 1950 showroom in Hillcrest, San Diego. “Boundless” showcases nearly 150 objects from Mingei’s permanent collection, exploring Southern California landscapes through the work of mid-twentieth century ceramicists. Step into the mysterious and the unknown at "The Veil Between," a group exhibition exploring the thinning of the veil between worlds—life and death, dreams and reality. Opening on October 11 from 6–10 p.m. at Distinction Gallery in Escondido, this event features original paintings, photography, drawings, and mixed media by visual artists from around the globe. Distinction Gallery has been a beacon for contemporary art in Southern California for more than twenty years. The opening reception will include live music, artists in attendance, and drinks available for purchase (21+) from Last Spot Bar, which offers a curated selection of wine, beer and cocktails. The pop-up takes place Saturday, December 13, and Sunday, December 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 251 N City Drive, North City, San Marcos. Guests can indulge in a special holiday menu featuring Annaluna’s handcrafted chocolates alongside Chef Christophe’s signature pastries. Offerings include Annaluna’s signature owl-shaped chocolate bonbons in flavors like Hazelnut Crisp, Dark Chocolate Caramel, Peanut Butter Caramel, and Dark Chocolate Passion Coconut. Chocolate tablets are available in rich milk and dark varieties, while candy bars feature layered flavors such as Baklava, Sticky Toffee, Raspberry Pistachio, and Coffee Caramel.
