On September 4 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Hello Mazda of San Diego is hosting a test drive event at James Madison High School as part of its Be Moved Drive Program. This program is designed to deliver substantial donations to individual schools and their unique programs through dealer-hosted test-drive events. The San Diego community ages 18+ with a valid US driver’s license are invited to ride and drive a Mazda vehicle to earn a $50 donation for James Madison High School - up to $10,000! The funds will benefit the school’s Automotive Technology Program, helping students discover what inspires them so they can do more of what moves them. Education plays a crucial role in empowering students, and this program is one way Mazda is investing in students and uplifting the community. James Madison High School focuses on preparing students for a specific trade or occupation. The students in this pathway can apply and extend concepts studied in their math and science classes to the automotive technology industry in the school’s state of the art eight bay automotive shop. The Mazda Be Moved funding will help pay stipends for student internships with their local dealers. They will also use the funds to purchase shop shirts and a series of patches for each certification that students can earn. Walk-ups are welcome, register on site during the event. Learn the fundamentals of sewing! Sundays, Sept 7, 14, 21, 28, Oct 5 & 12, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. In this 6-week sewing series, you will learn the fundamentals as you work through and develop new skills while learning to spread and cut your own customized apron. You will learn how to operate and thread the sewing machine. And each week, you will learn a basic sewing skill to apply to your apron–such as sewing and pressing seams, sewing darts, setting gathers. Each student can design the Apron by working in a fabric of their choice. 100% Cotton is required. You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine to use in this series, however it is highly recommended that you take your machine in for servicing before class if you are new to sewing to be sure the machine is in working order, especially if it is not a new machine. Please also bring an instruction manual for your machine. If it is determined that your machine is not ready and in working order, you will be welcome to use our in-studio sewing machines for class. A ‘suggested supplies’ list will be distributed in the first week of class. No experience necessary. Explore mindfulness-based writing using fun prompts to collectively inspire and deepen your intuitive expression. Participants in this one-session creative writing workshop will be inspired by a series of short, in-class prompts with a poem and pictures. The aim is to boost creativity and deepen each participant’s intuitive expression through contemplative practices. We will start this workshop with a brief mindfulness settling-in exercise—and a poem to accompany the session’s theme. And after each writing prompt, participants will be encouraged to discuss their work in small groups. This intuitive creation process is highly motivating; it enhances self-awareness and the flow of ideas and connection with others. This course is designed for every type of writer: novelists, poets, screenwriters, playwrights, journalists, essayists, etc., with all levels of experience: from novice writers to seasoned authors.
