  • Celebrate National Carousel Day at the Dorothea Laub Balboa Park Carousel on Friday, July 25, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. National Carousel Day is a FREE community event presented by Forever Balboa Park, offering free carousel rides all day, family friendly activities, and entertainment. Food from local vendors will be available for purchase. Event Schedule: Noon – 1 p.m.: Young Lions Jazz Conservatory 1 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Kathryn the Grape 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.: Mariachis and Folklorico Dancers 2:39 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.: Opera for Kids Balboa Park’s historic Herschell-Spillman Carousel was built in 1910 and still spins on its original General Electric motor to music played on its original military band organ.   • Learn to Weave with Silk! Saturday, July 26, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Beginners welcome! Learn to weave with colorful recycled sari silk in this hands-on, weaving workshop! Weaver, Dyer Jeanine Ertl will guide students through a variety of weaving techniques on warped lap looms using a rainbow of silk ribbon and yarn fibers to ignite the imagination. You’ll learn and play with the basics of the process from start to finish, each creating a unique handwoven that can be hung or draped, according to your desires. Please feel free to bring any items you may want to incorporate into your weaving, like interesting fibers, foraged and gathered natural objects, shells with holes, beads, etc. Each Weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind silk textile that can be hung as a Wall Hanging or finished as a square and used in a variety of creative ways. In addition, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you will have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home. Come explore mindfully making in a space of creativity & harmony with others. No experience necessary.   • Dive deep into Doctor Who with two awesome fan panels in one afternoon! 1 p.m. - "The Making of Futuristic Props and Costumes": From space-age vehicles and gadgets to futuristic uniforms and high tech armor, props and costumes play a key role in bringing the worlds of science fiction film and television to life. Come and learn how science-related fields such as material engineering, computer science, color theory, and others play a role in the conception, design, and fabrication of these essential components of some of your favorite fantastic fictional realms. 2 p.m. - "Timey-Wimey Robotics and Biotechnology in Doctor Who": Robotics are a cornerstone of science fiction, which in turn inspires real-life scientists and engineers. The futuristic robots and biotechnology of Doctor Who, from K9 to Cybermen, enable society to consider both the applications and implications of similar tech. Our panelists will discuss how Doctor Who’s stories of artificial intelligence, cyborgs, and other “upgrades” match up with our future and analyze the relationship between science fiction and real-life scientific advances.
