The Carlsbad Village Street Faire runs on the first Sunday of May and November. The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce organizes the event, which features 900 arts and crafts booths, antiques, international food court, a huge section with children’s rides, an entertainment stage, and beer garden. The Street Faire takes place in the Downtown Village of Carlsbad. Parking for this very popular event is limited, so visitors are encouraged to use the complimentary shuttles that run to and from the faire every 15 minutes. The shuttle pick-up locations are at the northwest corner of Sears at Shoppes at Carlsbad Plaza Camino Real (Highway 78 and Jefferson) as well as at the Poinsettia Coaster Station (Poinsettia exit off of I-5). Downtown El Cajon will sparkle this holiday season with Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon on Saturday, November 29, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Families, friends, and neighbors are invited to gather for an evening filled with festive fun, live entertainment, and the magic of the season. The heart of Downtown El Cajon will transform into a winter wonderland where visitors can shop an artisan market featuring local vendors, experience the magic of a Snow Zone complete with Santa’s magic snow bubble machines, and enjoy a variety of kids activities throughout the night. Guests can take photos with Santa, listen to live music, and watch as the holiday tree comes to life during a special lighting ceremony led by Mayor Bill Wells at 6:15 p.m. Children will also delight in riding a trackless train through the beautifully decorated streets, adding to the evening’s holiday charm. Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this workshop, participants will deepen their character work and learn how to craft a compelling memoir scene complete with description, details and dialogue that will bring the written word to life. A deeper understanding of the two voices of memoir will be explored; the voice of innocence and the voice of experience. Participants will gain a strong understanding of how and when to create real, conversational dialogue and utilize flashbacks. Tools to communicate clarity of character will be taught to bring the people in the story to life for the reader. Participants will be encouraged to submit another chapter of their work for peer review. (Those following the certificate program will have 3-5 chapters written by the end of this class.) Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self.
