This year's course will feature poems by state poets laureate. The responsibility of a State Poet Laureate is essentially the same as the U.S Poets Laureate, “…to make public appearances at poetry readings or literary events and to promote awareness of poetry." 46 states and the District of Columbia have a State Poet Laureate, most appointed for a one or two-year term. Those participating in Poetry For The People XXlll will read selections from these State Poet Laureates and, most importantly, are encouraged to bring to the discussions their own insights, observations and perceptions. Class members’ contributions are a vital part of the class experience. Chuck Kamar received his Bachelor’s from Boston State and his Master’s from Boston University. He taught for 34 years in the Newton Public Schools, the last 20 of which were at Newton North High School. In 1998 he won the Paul E. Elicker Award for Excellence in Teaching. Hawk Watch is an informative educational Biologists Talk and Q&A with falconry or ambassador raptors for you to see up close and personal! The outdoor program lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours (restrooms available) and is followed by an option for additional roadside observations of wild raptors and other wildlife including a Bald Eagle nest where you'll drive your own car less than 2 miles on paved roads and come and go at your leisure. Biologists and local expert volunteer observers will help you spot and identify birds and show them to you through our high-powered professional telescopes. In the event of rain, we will still have the educational program inside the Art Barn Gift Shop, but the usual falconry flight displays will not occur in the barn. There is no hiking portion of Hawk Watch, but we recommend wearing sturdy shoes for uneven terrain and going on your own to the nearby Ramona Grassland Preserve hiking trail after the program. Hawk Watch is wheelchair accessible, and we recommend using one if walking on uneven terrain could be a safety hazard for you. We hope you can make it! Trained at The Mannes College of Music in New York City, Steve Postell has built a wide-ranging career that spans Broadway, national touring, film and television composition, studio production, and work with some of the most influential artists in modern music. His early work included performing with Pure Prairie League, appearing in Broadway productions such as Evita and The Man of La Mancha, and co-writing the score for the off-Broadway rock musical "Fallen Angel." Steve has written music for film and television, contributed guitar and songwriting to albums by David Crosby, and released his own recent album, "Walking Through These Blues," featuring an array of guest artists including Iain Matthews, Tony Furtado, Bekka Bramlett, Greg Leisz, and others. His collaborations extend to John Oates, Jennifer Warnes, Kenny Loggins, Eric Andersen, Dan Navarro, and many more. A significant chapter of his recent work includes co-producing and performing on an album with renowned guitarist and songwriter Danny Kortchmar, which led to the formation of The Immediate Family. This group, featuring legendary session musicians Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Russ Kunkel, and Steve, has released multiple recordings and is the subject of an award-winning documentary produced by Magnolia Films. In the past year, Steve has appeared at benefit concerts alongside artists such as Shawn Colvin, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Joe Walsh, John Fogerty, and Alan Parsons. His performances reflect the depth of his musicianship and a lifelong commitment to creativity and collaboration. This engaging reception and talk by Bronwen Wilson will explore the poses and gestures in Renaissance portraits, revealing the inventive ways women - led by the trailblazing Sofinisba Anguissola - used "the mute eloquence of gesture" to make their paintings speak. In an era when portraiture was often dismissed as a mechanical skill suited to women perceived to lack imagination, these artists defied convention. They infused their sitters with personality, narrative, and emotion - proving that a glance, a hand, or the tilt of a head could speak volumes. Her research focuses on early modern visual culture, with particular interests in portraiture, physiognomy, and cross-cultural exchange. She has published widely on these topics and is the editor and co-editor of several recent volumes.
