She graduated in 2009 from San Diego State University with a degree in journalism and a minor in English. At SDSU she was a regular contributor to the on-campus newspaper, The Daily Aztec. Her freelance work has been published in San Diego CityBeat, San Diego Uptown News, the Urbanist and Pacific San Diego Magazine. Carissa is a San Diego native.
