Cases of the flu are already being seen on the East Coast. Doctors say with so many people traveling cross country, flu season is only weeks away in California. Doctor Richard Stack, a Sacramento infectious disease specialist, says it’s a good time to get a flu shot.

Stack: Any given year, it’s estimated that somewhere between 40 and 50 thousand people die in this country from influenza, and that’s something that cannot be overemphasized, considering it’s a preventable disease.”

Stack says there is no shortage of flu vaccine this year. In fact, medical officials expect to have about 40 million extra doses. Young people, anyone over 50 years old and those with compromised immune systems are especially advised to get a flu shot.
