Capitol Hill Update: Election Season, War in Iraq, Terrorism

Audio

Aired 4/19/09

Members of Congress are off to the races. This week they start focusing on winning re-election in a November contest that has a lot of incumbents running scared.

The urge to campaign is the reason why the House and the Senate wrapped up so much work late last week. The bills they passed included a huge defense appropriation that will keep the money flowing to the war in Iraq. That bill contains some emergency funding to keep the rest of the government chugging along for the next two months.

Also, Congress passed a controversial bill that spells out the way suspected terrorists will be detained, tried and interrogated.
