$6 Million Endowment Given to San Marcos Unified School District

The San Marcos Unified School District held its "welcome back" breakfast for faculty and staff today. And Superintendent Kevin Holt brought great news to the table.

He says the District has been given a $6 million endowment from the Liechtag Family Foundation that will make it possible for students with financial needs to go college.

Holt : We have an agreement with Cal State University San Marcos that students who have been with us since the ninth grade and meet all the requirements to enter the university -- that once they have applied for financial aid through the federal and state governments -- that the difference between that amount and their obligation will be offset through this endowment.

Holt says the endowment memorializes Joli Ann Leichtag. She was a kindergarten teacher in San Diego schools who recently died.

There's a new elementary school under construction now in San Marcos, and it will be named “Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary School.”
