Tom Fudge: If you live in San Diego, there's something you learn. When a military man says he's just back from "The Gulf," he's not talking about the Gulf of Mexico. American troop presence in the Middle East has long included a naval presence in the Persian Gulf. And the Navy's mission there has been modified in the years since America invaded and occupied Iraq.

Tony Perry, of the LA Times , spent a couple weeks covering locally-based Marines, serving in Iraq. During the past week, he's been aboard ship in the Gulf.
