Embedded Local Journalist Reports from Persian Gulf: Week 7

Tony Perry, the San Diego bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, recently left Iraq after spending six weeks as an embedded journalist with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Pendleton.

Tom Fudge: If you live in San Diego, there's something you learn. When a military man says he's just back from "The Gulf," he's not talking about the Gulf of Mexico. American troop presence in the Middle East has long included a naval presence in the Persian Gulf. And the Navy's mission there has been modified in the years since America invaded and occupied Iraq.

Tony Perry, of the LA Times , spent a couple weeks covering locally-based Marines, serving in Iraq. During the past week, he's been aboard ship in the Gulf.
