Tom Fudge: A month ago, voters all around the nation went to the polls to vote in an exciting presidential primary, as were voters in Imperial County. But there was something else on the ballot that voters in the Valley were excited about. It was called Measure X . Measure X, which passed with close to 70% of the vote, prohibits the import of sewage sludge into Imperial County.
The reason for this measure is a proposal by a Bakersfield company to create a sludge to energy plant near Niland, in the Imperial Valley. Opponents say it would be a bad precedent and it would be a black mark on the environment.
But Liberty Energy and its supporters say “Hold on! We haven't even seen the results of an environmental impact report yet. Maybe this thing isn't as bad as you think, or maybe it's not bad at all. Besides it'll be a source of alternative energy.”
