Late Budget Means Crunch Time for Governor
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
The state budget isn't the only thing Governor Schwarzenegger will be signing this week. His press Secretary says the Governor has 875 bills sitting on his desk. He has to make a decision on all of them by next September 30. But the Governor says he'll get it done on-time:
Schwarzenegger: Right now, because I have a short period of time, only 11 days, I sit there day and night and I work and I work and work to get the bills done on time because I don't want to face the consequences.
If the Governor doesn't act on a bill in time, it can become law without his signature.
The Governor has less time than usual to act on bills this year. That's because during the summer budget stalemate he told lawmakers he wouldn't sign any legislation until they passed a budget. So lawmakers didn't send him many bills until there was a deal.
