DEA Identifies Ringleaders of Tijuana Violence
Thursday, January 8, 2009
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has published a poster of 10 men it believes are locked in violent battle for drug trafficking routes through Tijuana, Mexico.
The poster released Thursday shows rare photos of Fernando Sanchez Arellano, identified by the DEA as a leader of the Arellano Felix cartel, and Eduardo Teodoro Garcia Simental, identified as his archrival.
The DEA says six are lieutenants of Arellano, also known as "El Ingeniero," or "The Engineer." Two are identified as underlings to Garcia.
Tijuana is the birthplace of the Arellano Felix cartel, which rose to power in 1980s. The city bordering San Diego recorded 843 killings last year, up from 337 a year earlier.
