Finding Gold and Guns at the LAPD
Thursday, July 22, 2010
I started working at KPBS when I was a freshman at SDSU. The past 17 years at the station has been filled with memorable moments.
“I have this GREAT place I want to take you to.” Huell says in his signature way and Southern accent. He drives us across town providing colorful commentary along the way. Upon arriving at our destination and getting out of the car, we hear gun fire. And it wasn’t just one or two shots; it was nonstop!
Frantically, I check to see if I or anyone else was hit. Then, I realize we are outside of the LAPD Academy and shooting range! Whoa!
The food at the LAPD Academy cafeteria was great and everyone knew Huell. Our group made it home without any further causes for alarm. But we now share a wonderful experience and funny memory.
Now, whenever I see Huell - whether it’s on TV or in person - I am reminded of that day and finding a piece of “California’s gold”.
