The San Diego Unified School District received a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense for programs that benefit the children of military service members, it was announced today.
The grant is through the DOD's Promoting Student Achievement at Schools Impacted by Military Force Structure Changes program.
"Our grant program provides needed funding for schools serving the children of our military service members,'' said Shirley Miles, director of the DOD's Education Activity Educational Partnership. "These students face unique challenges being in a military family and we are proud to be able to help the
school districts that support them.''
The grant will fund programs to improve student achievement and teacher effectiveness in math, science and technology at nine elementary schools in San Diego, according to the DOD.
The SDUSD serves students whose parents are stationed at Naval Air Station San Diego and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
