Cruise Ship Delays Arrival In San Diego Due To Tsunami

— A cruise ship delayed its arrival today in San Diego for a couple of hours in light of the tsunami generated by the earthquake in Japan, a Carnival Cruise Lines official said.

The Carnival Spirit, returning from a voyage to Mexico, decided to wait offshore "in an abundance of caution,'' said Jennifer de la Cruz, the company's director of public relations.

The first waves from the tsunami reached the Southern California coast around 8:40 a.m., creating unusually strong currents, though no serious problems were reported.

The cruise ship's crew also took into account heavy fog this morning in the entrance to San Diego Bay, between Point Loma and Coronado, de la Cruz said.

"We opted to act very conservatively in the interest of safety,'' she said, adding that the ship docked safely at 11 a.m.

No other Carnival ships were affected, she said.
