Mayor Sanders Presents Revised Budget With Full Funding To Rec Centers

Mayor Jerry Sanders will present his revised budget plan, with full funding of recreation centers, to the City Council today.

The mayor announced last week that the city expects to make $5.3 million more in the next fiscal year, which begins July 1, than he thought when his original budget proposal was released last month. In that one, he halved the operating hours of recreation centers and libraries.

In announcing that he will fully restore recreation center hours, he said the facilities were effective in keeping kids off the streets. At least one branch library in each City Council district will also be open at the same amount of hours it is now.

The mayor also restored funding for hands-on training for lifeguards, who since last year have only been able to hone their skills on computers.

Council members welcomed the mayor's updated plans, but they still want to find extra funding to keep all of the libraries open.
