The U.S. Army will no longer sponsor NASCAR vehicles, citing budget concerns.

The Associated Press reports the Army is pulling out of its sponsorship of Stewart-Haas Racing at the end of the NASCAR season.

The Pentagon has used NASCAR sponsorship as a recruiting tool for years. However, an amendment attached to the defense spending bill would ban Department of Defense sponsorship of NASCAR.

The measure by GOP Rep. Jack Kingston of Georgia and Democratic Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota has so far cleared the House Appropriations Committee.

Kingston has said of the measure:

"I think that if Southern, pro-NASCAR people say, 'You know what, I love NASCAR. But this is not a good recruiting tool. We've got to make some serious decisions in the name of the (USA).' I think NASCAR fans would appreciate that...

"I don't believe for a second that NASCAR will suffer without these millions of dollars being pumped in by the taxpayer."
