Female Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

Army Spc. Krystal M. Fitts, 26, of Houston, Texas, died July 17 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered from indirect fire, according to the Department of Defense.

Fitts was on her first deployment when she was killed.

Fitts was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Fitts was part of a Female Engagement Team. She had learned one of the local languages - Pashtu - so she could serve as a translator between the military and local Afghan women.

On her Facebook page, Fitts posted an A.A. Milne quote from his Winnie-the-Pooh books as her cover photo. It reads:

"If ever there comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart, and I'll stay there forever."
