The Fayetteville Observer reports Fitts was part of a Female Engagement Team. She had learned one of the local languages - Pashtu - so she could serve as a translator between the military and local Afghan women.

On her Facebook page, Fitts posted an A.A. Milne quote from his Winnie-the-Pooh books as her cover photo. It reads:

"If ever there comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart, and I'll stay there forever."
