Should Sex Offenders Be Banned From The Military?

Home Post Blog: Felony sex offenders would be forbidden from joining in the United States military under a new measure by Senator Barbara Boxer.

The Marine Corps Times reports the bill is an effort to put some teeth into a 2009 Defense Department policy that bans the distribution of criminal history waivers for prospective service members who’ve been convicted of a felony sex crime.

Boxer says of her legislation: "There is never a reason to allow people convicted of such heinous crimes to be allowed in our military. This will ensure it never happens again." (read more)

I normally support Ms. Boxer, but I'm disappointed to see her engaging in the erosion of civil liberties by hopping on to the ever-popular sex offender political gravy train.

Ms. Boxer, you are putting your normally noble political views and credibility on the line by engaging in what has been predominately local politicians' (like opportunistic N. Fletcher) fondness for riding the sex offender hysteria wave to political fortune.

My objections are as follows:

(1) once someone has paid their debt to society and served their sentence they should be ale to return to their lives

(2) it's a violation of civil rights to focus only on Sex offenders. If you want a "no felon" policy, them fine, but why single out sex offenders? You are saying murderers, wife beaters and armed robbers are fine?

(3) your quote, *"There is never reason to allow people convicted of such heinous crimes to be allowed in our military."*

I wouldn't think I would need to explain this to **you** Ms. Boxer, but sex offenders are a broad category of criminals ranging from serial rapists and child molesters, to a 19 yr old who had consensual sex with a 16 yr old or a couple caught having sex in their car.

Shame on you for being so overly broad and unreasonable, not, like you Ms. Boxer.

Do you have any idea how many people will be kicked out of the military if that's the case? The military is abound with rapists and hell-bent on hiding the issues. We'd have to pull out of Afghanistan if we did that.

But hey, let's play this thing out and see what happens. Maybe we will get justice in the end.
