Camp Pendleton Marines will be on hand for the Western Surfing Association's surf contest at San Clemente Pier this Saturday and Sunday. They won't be there to catch waves, though, but to collect Toys for Tots gifts.

WSA is encouraging participants to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the contest, where they'll later be collected by the Marines.

WSA Director Mary Lou Drummy explained to SurfWire:

"We are so blessed as surfers to be able to live near the beach, and have the time, health and resources to allow us to surf. This is a great opportunity for us to give back."

Toys for Tots volunteer coordinator Deborah Anderson told SurfWire what kind of gifts are most needed this year:

"We always seem to be short of gifts for 0 – 2 year olds and 10 – 17 year olds. Sporting equipment of any kind for the boys, and games and “girlie” items for the teen girls would be greatly appreciated. Checks are also welcome, made out to 'Toys for Tots – North County.'”

You don't have to be a surfer to bring a gift to the contest. But competitors will receive a free long-sleeve WSA shirt if they do...
