Camp Pendleton To Commemorate Iwo Jima Landing With 21-Gun Salute (Video)

Video

Iwo Jima Flag Raising

Camp Pendleton artillery units will fire a ceremonial 21-gun salute on Saturday to commemorate the anniversary of the landings on Iwo Jima during World War II.

The salute will take place at the Pacific Views Event Center between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, according to a Marine Corps news release.

Folks who live as much as 50 miles away may be able to hear the sound of gunfire, depending on atmospheric conditions.

The Department of Defense estimates more than 6,800 Marines and sailors lost their lives during the Battle for Iwo Jima, which took place between February 19 and March 25, 1945.

The iconic image of five Marines and one Navy Corpsman raising the United States flag on Mt. Suribachi took place during the battle. You can watch video of the flag raising, courtesy of YouTube, posted up top.

The U.S. Military high command can celebrate military events all they want. So long as the ranking generals allow the military to be a breeding ground for serial rapists the honor of our fallen men and women remains baseless.

It was reported last week the commanding general of a base in Italy reversed a guilty verdict of an officer for rape. Imagine that! A jury panel of five listened to evidence and convicted a man in the military of raping a woman in the military. The commanding general has the right to reverse the decision, which he did.

Members of Congress requested the general explain his decision.

The general's response: "It is unlawful to reverse the decision of a commanding general."

How's that for respecting your chain of command?

This authority of reversing decisions is for no other reason than high-ranking officers protecting their careers. They want the image to remain untarnished. The result is looking the other way and allowing serial rapists to go free.

We gripe at the sexual abuses at the hand of the church. It's about time we recognize and do something about the rapes occuring in our military and return honor to the image by doing the right thing.

And as for that general in Italy who reversed the decision, this is another reason that type authority should be removed.
