Navy Sailors And Marines To Get Career Sea Pay Raises

U.S. Navy

Sailors aboard the USS Denver plot the ship's location.

Starting this summer, the Navy will give sailors and Marines a 25 percent raise in career sea pay.

Sailors and Marines earn career sea pay in addition to their base pay, as a way to compensate them for time at sea (and away from their families).

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced the pay hike earlier this month:

"This increase is long overdue and is meant to reward our Sailors and Marines for their continued sacrifices as part of 'America's Away Team'."

The Navy Times reports the decision to boost career sea pay was prompted, in part, by the Navy's need to fill "as many as 9,000 open jobs in the fleet."

The raises will go into effect early this summer, although the Navy has yet to announce a specific date.
